Considering the super nice bikes you have, put the money in the bank! But I know that's really boring.

I'd second a Kirk with your healthy budget. Or a Bishop with Max fork and direct mount brakes.

I’m in the queue (is it still queued if the man just built it?) for an RS. Got in April 2020.
Due to long lead time on paint, ETA is roughly December 2021. Like you, I’m in no hurry but I’m ready to put my color choice to bed.
If inclined, keep an eye on his site.

…and then I’m reminded of how much I like other stuff; and what other brands are out there - I’d still really love a Breadwinner Conti, a Bishop, a Cherubim, an IF, a Firefly… ugh, such a #firstworldproblem…

Kirk Custom fillet brazed or Chris Kvale for me…

Went through this a while ago when contemplating what to buy myself for a 70th birthday present.
Like you, no shortage of really nice fillies in the stable.
Landed on a Pegoretti Duende with custom paint and (of course) downtube shifter braze-ons.
It's on the Big Brown Truck, should be here...tomorrow.

I admit that I do the passive looking thing from time to time. I'm missing a "pure" road bike at the moment, so here's what I think about when I think about the same question you're thinking about...

    Stelbel SB/03.
I like the mashup of a "heritage" brand and modern design. The oversized chainstays and hooded dropouts are boss. The subtle branding and monochrome finish is elegant. I usually think about local builders, but this thing speaks to me.

    Bishop
This bike was at the Philly expo a couple of years ago. It's my size, but I resisted the temptation to buy it in favor of made-to-measure when the time is right. Again, I like the monochrome aspects and the part selection is sweet. I also like the fact that it has capacity to go up to 32s with calipers, iirc.

    Sachs
I'll wrap it up with my prime contender. When I think in terms of "one and done" - the road bike that I can ride now and will most likely still want to ride in 10, 15, 20 years if I'm still kicking, this is where my head is at.

    Happy shopping.

The Stelbel and Bishop are stunners and was gonna mention both ATH but wanted someone to yell at me that my suggestion for a TREK Emonda was lame. I still like my suggestion.

Curious where you land in the end.

    Is Zullo still around?

Those big chainstays and socket dropouts remind me of the Zullo InQubo. I should have bought one like many years ago already.

They also age pretty well. This is a 78:

BTW - When I mentioned putting my color choice to bed (in the above post) - I meant selecting that color. I've gone back to https://theradavist.com/2017/11/2017...e-jarrod-bunk/ countless times just as confirmation. Shit never gets old and makes my heart skip a beat. So it'll be.

    Festka
    Gaulzetti

Both make uniquely light stiff racing frames meant for going fast. Ungravel. I think Festka road frames maybe take a 28mm tire now.

There are lots of suggestions here for beautiful and elegant bikes. Personally, I’m intrigued by the fact that Mosaic has put development resources behind their steel bike. Their Ti bikes are obviously great but probably out of the price range.

But let me ask what drives the desire for a pure road bike? Is it to go fast? No question that fast is fun. So, I’d say consider a carbon super bike. This year is probably the end of the line for rim brakes on the World Tour. I say grab one while you can. Crap. I think I just talked myself into a Dogma.

If I had a bunch of cash burning a hole in my pocket right now I think I’d be looking at a rim brake Dogma F or a Colnago or maybe even a Specialized Aethos, though that’s obviously a disc bike.

As for custom? Don’t know… but those Bishops with the direct mount brakes are pretty sexy.

Already more than enough excellent recs here for steel, but speaking as an owner of both a Bishop and Sachs that were delivered in the same year--2019, I'd say it probably comes down to lugs or no lugs, right? Of course Chris can make an amazing lugged frameset, but Richard will only make what he makes, so if you want different tube profiles, fillets, direct mount brakes etc, then go with Chris. Then a year later, when you realize you must have a bespoke Sachs in your life, get on that list ASAP!

Zanconato. I've been waiting on a part for my 650b bike that typically gets all my miles, and so I've been riding my circa 2005 lugged steel Zanconato again. It's such a great-riding, beautiful bike. I play out a similar--though for me, hypothetical--thought process often and others I really like include IF, FortyFour, Firefly, Mosaic, and Prova.

I don't think he's building at the moment.
