    Default A pretty dumb ?

What foot do you stand on at stops?
If you favor your right hand and foot, is it your right foot down?
    Or, the other scenario.
Or do you mix it up?
This stuff keeps me up late at night.
I just took note today that a couple of my riding buddies have a different preference.
    Let me know after pie.

Right foot down at stops - which is perhaps odd, given that the kerb is on the left most times I stop (we're like the UK here in Aus.).

I've tried to unclip the left foot more regularly because of ^^ that, but I have to think about it too much; and my clipping back in is *significantly* more clumsy...

Isn't it the opposite to what you suggest? - I'm left handed and put my right foot down and I think most people put the other foot down.

The other way round just feels really wrong.
It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage.

I would agree. Most will unclip their non dominant side.

I'm wired like kdawg. The only difference is that I'm right handed.

The other way of looking at this is, with which pedal do you start? It is likely to be your dominant side, leaving the other foot on the ground.

When I used to race BMX, even with a two-pedal start, my right pedal was always forward. Starting with the left is unnatural for me.

I tend to stop on whichever leg is feeling like it needs a stretch the most.

    Left foot down.

I think I prefer to re-start pedaling with my right.

I intentionally vary which foot I use.

Riding on the right, the road usually crowns toward the left. So it's easier to reach down with the left foot. Then that's what I'll do.

If the road is mostly flat at the time, I'll use the right foot, hopefully to even out cleat wear.

If the road crowns to the right well, I use the right foot.

It also gives me practice in clipping in-out at stops with both feet.

It's a little game I like to play, but that's what I do.

Iíve had a chronic right ACL tear and that knee is unstable with side loads, so I usually put the left leg down.

That changed for a while after I tore my left quad tendon. I babied that leg for a while after surgery, so I cautiously put the right down.

Now the left knee is pretty solid again despite missing the vastus lateralis part of the quad, so itís back to left leg down.

(Although I prefer to just show off and do a track stand, if the situation allows).

I alternate which foot I put down for three reasons. First, in an emergency or unforseen situation where I don't have time to control which foot is at 12 oclock, I want to be proficent at releasing either foot and getting it to the ground. Second, I want to be proficient at getting either foot into the pedal from a stop for when road/terrain conditions dictate a specific foot on the ground. Third, clipping and unclipping both feet roughly an eqaul amount keeps me from having to replace one cleat prematurely.

For me, cycling has always been a thinking thing. I enjoy concentrating on small details and working on my overall skills every time I get on the bike.

Right foot, right handed. No good reason, just 56 years of practice. Right cleat wears out before the left.

Mix it up. After getting back into vintage bikes I got rid of all my clipless pedals and now just ride with toe clips and straps.* I think it helps to have a bit of ambidexterity in this manuever. I am generally pretty helpless performing tasks of any kind on my left side, but pedal entry with left seems to be about as good as right.

    * I picked up a pair of Sampson Stratics pedals a few months ago. I still haven't decided if/when I'm going to try them. It will require some new shoes. I also have a pair of SPDs in the parts bin just because. (I do have shoes for them which I haven't worn in probably 10-15 years.)

I think it also depends if you are also a motorcycle riders as regardless of your preference you have to put your right foot down to operate the gearbox with the left foot. In that case you might be used to use your right foot even though you would have favored the left one in another context.

Right hand dominant, right foot goes to ground, left foot on pedal at 10 o'clock, start up by pushing down on left then clip in with right as that pedal rotates to top. If on a significant side hill slope foot on the higher down first.

Red bikes, right foot down, Blue bikes left foot down.
I think it is to counter the torque of the red shift or blue shift.

I'm a motorcycle rider as well. However, my right foot never hits the ground until I get off the machine. Putting the right foot down gives up the rear brake and at low speeds, especially important where the front wheel is turned off center for balance. That leaves only the front brake to complete the stop and if combined with the front wheel being off center it can cause the bike to tip over. I can tell in 10 seconds if a motorcycle rider is skilled just watching them stop and start the machine.

    Sorry for the thread drift.

    Right handed and right footed.

    Left foot down.

It isn't a decision I consciously made, but as mentioned above, I assume it's because it allows me to start with my dominant foot/leg already clipped in.
