Default NFS lube claim re: apply only 12 drops

now don't get me wrong, i love the stuff, but wondering about the reality of 12 drops about the chain, on a relative few links, and then doing the spin really does lube the WHOLE chain. can someone provide a practical explanation?

It gets on the cog/ring teeth, and then onto other links/rollers, and the motion gets it moved into where it belongs.

It totally works IME. I don't actually count drops, but I do 1 drop every ~4" or so of chain.

Sure. As those relative few links distribute the lube to the chainrings and cogs, the residual lube on the teeth will apply enough to the other links as they encounter them via normal use.

Wipe the chain with a rag, apply 12 drops, run up and down the cassette through the gears two three times, wipe again with rag, done.

    Pretty amazing.

Yes to all of the above and....I think for some this is hard to believe because we’ve become accustomed to over lubricating. So “ the right amount” seems stingy. At least it did to me when I first started using it.

I just bought a second bottle. After about six years!

Works as advertised and I still have some bottles of TT's original elixir with the vintage aroma, so I tend to overdo it...that is I wipe the chain with WD40 and a sock about every 200-250 miles or so and lube again.

The one time I didn't follow the 10-12 drops routine (using more because, ya know..) I got significantly more build up of sludge (cause I'm too lazy to wipe my chain after every ride or so) with no real gain in lubricity from what I could tell. I forget the technical term, but it has more "creep" than your average lube.

That film only needs to be a few molecules thick, so even with all the surface area of all those rollers, it doesn’t add up to a ton of volume.

And it serves no purpose on most of the surfaces except to collect dirt.

If you figure out how to apply that film only to the surfaces that need it, and not to the ones that don't, and I'll buy you a shot a Whistle Pig. A bottle if you give me a bottle!

I think that's the point of wiping with a rag after application.

That (what you said) and there is a miniscule amount of hazing which happens around the pins.

If anyone says needle dropper I'll ban them ;) Been there done that, you'll end up overlubing your chain.

Slight over application and cleanup works. Krikey if we were any better applying the stuff the the "right" places I'd have an even worse business model ;)

I’m from the “just add more lube on top of whatever is there” and eventually clean off the sludge i create.

Recently started wiping the chain down with a cloth sprayed with WD40. Wow. That is 30 seconds well spent.

You really don't want to use WD40. That hurts the good lube.

I use a minimum amount of WD(on a rag then wipe with a clean part of the rag) to remove the crud on the outside plates after most rides, probably not much gets into the pins/rollers to degrade the lube so I think the benefits outweigh the downside if any.

WD does a great job blasting dirt/grime/small animals out of the chain. Just let it dry for an hr. or wipe the chain down with hot water and dawn dish soap after and good to go.

Fortunately, this is not rocket science and the worst thing that can happen is you apply too much lube and make a mess. Not the end of the world.

I'm not a fan of WD40 for cleaning because of the residue it leaves. Try a spray can of a good motorcycle chain cleaner like Motul. Motorcycle lube is far stickier than bicycling lube so it's much harder to clean, and that cleaner works really well for bicycle chains. Bonus: you have an excuse to go to a motorcycle shop.

LPS-1 is to WD-40 as Sam Adams is to Pabst Blue Ribbon.

After you push your lawnmower through the sticky, sweet August dusk for two hours nothing tastes better than a PBR.
