Simple Green, a chain brush, then water from the hose works really well, too.
Well, not so much after cutting the grass though. For the chain, I meant.

I've said it before: kid at the shop turned me on to Golden Degreaser by the makers of Purple Extreme. We use it for our "advanced/degreasing" tune-ups. It dissolves grease and rinses off with water. It's really, really good.

I pressure wash straight on the chain if I can put my bike in the sun after.
My notoriously greasy chains can be put away wet without finding a rusty chain the next morning however.
How do you deal with water on such a -12 drop - dry chain?

Same way you normally would. If I've been riding in the rain, I wipe the chain down and re-assess whether it needs a touch more lube.
When I clean the bike, I degrease then wash with soap and water....let it air dry a bit, then run it through a clean rag before re-applying the lube
Sometimes if I'm in a rush after a dirty or wet ride, I'll use a Pro-Gold towel to wipe down the chain, then clean rag and re-lube.

    My 2 cents.

Chain lube and maintenance is one of the most over-thought things that people do related to bikes. Especially once NFS showed up.
    Apply a few drops.
    Ride.
Wipe the chain and give the rear d pulleys a quick pinch with the rag while he chain is still moving to clean them.
    Ride.
Opps forgot to wipe the chain after that ride.
    Ride.

    Ride.
    Put a few drops on.
    Ride
    Ride
Wipe the chain and give the rear d pulleys a quick pinch with the rag while he chain is still moving to clean them.

Every once and a while wipe the chain rings.

After several thousand miles the chain has stretched. Chuck it.

    For additional information:
Put in 5k-7k miles a year.
I ride outside all year round.
Live in the north east near the ocean which means rain, snow, ice, slush, sand, and salt.
    Don't baby the bike(s).
Tend to find single track to ride the road bike on (mud, sand, etc)
I keep my bike in the dinning room which means it is not a gunky mess....yes I am married.
Same routine for the mtb...except that bike doesn't live in the dinning room.

Still on the second bottle. Had to buy a wear gauge because I was really surprised how long chains seemed to last and that confirmed it. Usually the chain, ring and cogs are the only things not filthy on the bikes.

Huh... I've been doing it in reverse of that: On those times when the chain is filthy enough to actually warrant a cleaning/de-greasing, I start with the hot water & Dawn dish soap, then I apply the WD-40 to take advantage of its "water displacement" capabilities.

But I'll concede that that may fall under the "we're overthinking this" rubric. I like Brian's Use NFS/Ride/Wipe/Ride etc. formula and have been gravitating towards that on all my bikes.

You can think of it as: neighbor smokes a joint, and the whole neighborhood gets stoned.
