Default New Pacenti Freehub Design. Thoughts?

This looks interesting. But would any of the big three ever go for it like they did bottom brackets?

if someone (KCNC, Samson or even Pacenti himself) moves forward with a lightweight cassette and body combo that’ll work with a few popular hubs, we think the large manufacturers would follow suit if a market materializes.
No they won't. Campagnolo's pride is on the line and Shimano doesn't want to retool.

This is one of those ideas that makes complete sense for the consumer and yet will never happen because of perceived costs to the producers.

That is no game changer. Cool none the less, I just don't see this as more than an another "ok" way to put cogs on a bike.

Let's hope not. The last thing we need is 10 more pointless "standards" on the market. As a shimano user, I have absolutely nothing to complain about - other than companies like Pacenti trying to muddy the waters.

I agree with them in theory, but in practice, it's enabling more planned obsolescence - the last thing any of us needs.

I think that is a design with huge merit. Tanks run on that interface as do the new Grove/Groovy cranks.

    Does retro-fit=obsolescence?

Didn't the boys over at The Hive dig out that bit of WWII tank engineering a few years ago for their crank/axel interface?

Yep. The Hive is now branding their cranks at e*thirteen. Looks like Pacenti is using the same German DIN 32711-P3 interface.

    Found this on DIN 32711-P3

Reminds me of a square taper bottom bracket spindle, and we all know how much those sucked.

Edit - looked at the article, and this is different from what the article originally contained. When first released the picture was of a square interface. Huh.

Indeed. The Hive is cranking out (pun intended) some good stuff. Several bits of their kit will be on my next MTB.

i would think Pacenti could get a pretty good foot in the door by offering a DT and King compatible freehub with his design and then partnering with a vendor or two to make various cassettes. i'd welcome the option of a 10-34 cassette with a 32 up front for mtb use or a 10-27 with a 39 for cx racing. presumably the cassettes could be individually configured or machined from solid stock depending on whether people value customization or weight savings.

You read my mind . . . my initial ha ha reaction was, "Hell yeah, I'll put that on my 650B mountain bike!" And then I realized this might make a 12-speed 9-36 cassette possible, in a light(er)weight format. Coupled with a 32 up front, that would give me a 23 to 93 gear inch range. Anyone want a 1 x 12 mtb? And no freaking jig saw puzzle splined cassette freehubs? No cassettes cutting into the freehub body? I could get excited about this.
