Default Mountain biking in Iceland: Any experiences

To celebrate my 40th this summer, I am considering a mountain bike trip to Iceland. I am looking at a few different guided and supported options. Even before the Hans Rey video and the short promo (below), this trip has been on my bucket list.

Icebike Adventures is at the top of my list right now. There are a few other outfits out there but these guys seem to have it dialed.

Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks in advance y'all.

When renting a vehicle in Iceland, get the 4wd with the snorkel.
Panniers should be Ortlieb Back Rollers, they float, great for stream crossings.
Due to flooding, small streams have fords, not bridges.
    Opel Corsas are not amphibious.

Watching this thread with interest...The wife and I turn 40 within a couple weeks of each other in 2017 and just this weekend started talking about a little trip. Iceland is in the mix, as is Nova Scotia/Newfoundland. Ours will not be bike-specific however.

Ásta with Icebike Adventures has been very responsive and helpful. We are looking to August b/c their June and July adventures are more or less booked. Included in the price of admission: full suspension MTB, guide, Super Jeep for transportation of bikes and gear, accommodations and all meals in the highlands.

Really excited about this. Looking at a few more details before we book.

I tend to look at things differently now and figure we only live once...might as well make the most of it.

    Cheers,
    Guy

in the past year, two at most, seems one of the cycling mags, or maybe it was "Outside", had a good article on a couple that took a trip around Iceland. As i recall, he cycled, she drove much of it. I'll hunt around see if i still have it.

I've been to Iceland and I agree, it's a fascinating country. The geology is right in your face, fire and ice and all that. But I've never once thought about biking there. What I remember is 42°F, windy and rain. Maybe the mt bike would be a lot more fun than a road bike? Whatever you do, make sure you visit a lot of swimming pools. The Icelanders know how to do municipal swimming pools proper.

I can recommend Newfoundland, especially if you stay at one of the lighthouse inns, like Quirpon Island.

But not if Iceland is an option. Go to Iceland.

I ran a marathon there one August 11. It was about 45 degrees. It was windy. Very, very, windy. Good thing I wasn't any worse of a runner than I was because about three minutes after I finished it began to rain sideways and the temperature dropped.

I loved it there. It is the most visually spectacular place I think that I have ever been.

The attitude there is the very best. At the geyser that all the rest are named for, you stand as close as you dare to thirty thousand gallons of boiling hot water erupting from the ground. Some string on little sticks and a sign that says "Warning, it's hot." are all the barriers there are. Obviously if you get boiled they are going to point out that you're really dumb and hand you some gauze telling you to patch yourself up and don't be so stupid next time. I liked that.

A friend of mine was there in July two years ago with some friends of his. They cycled for almost a month: very cold, and rainy but a wonderful experience. They arranged the route by themselves.

I will try to get a friend into this thread. He did an unsupported circumnavigation of the island in 2006 or so. But then, he's also done a couple of unsupported cross-Australia rides. I don't have such a love of dirt and tarps.

I know perfect weather cannot be guaranteed but I am not too worried. We spent last summer in northern interior Alaska. I adapted and still rode despite the cold and the wet which there was a lot of.

I contemplated sorting it out myself but logistically it would have been difficult. Accessing the highlands requires a proper off-road vehicle like a super jeep. I've sorted out plenty of my own mtb trips. Iceland is a little different eh...and I want to make the most of my time while there on the (ever changing) ground. I've never done anything supported like this and I figure Iceland is the place where a guide might be handy...

Speaking generally about supported tours (and not specifically about Iceland,) they can be perfect for exactly the reasons you mention, as long as the company's mojo matches yours and you have patience with the few things that require giving up a bit of control. Less time spent on machines and logistics, more time spent enjoying what you came to enjoy.

Booked! I opted for their 16 August Thorsmork trip in/around the Ţórsmörk nature reserve.

I cannot wait. This is going to be beyond epic.

Your trip sounds great. For inspiration watch Heima by Sigur Ros if you haven't seen it.
