Default Most Popular Threads on VSalon

Two most popular threads this week, one is about a respray on a year old $3000 frame and the other is about a $14000 big brand bike and the angst involved in the purchase. The first has 170 replies, the second has 159. A recent Bike Forums/Weight Weenies/Paceline type thread about busted carbon only got to 100 replies before the lock.

So the two top threads, was that what you guys meant for VS. Serious question. Not trolling.

If the banter is good then it doesn't seem like a big deal. Seems more like banter between friends than a bunch of spray. What are the leading threads for "views"?

The FNL series get a pretty consistent 2500 views/week. I think those are pretty popular.

The weekly ride report threads get a lot of views. I think the photos from Switzerland, France, Belgium, wherever Rohner is, Colorado and SF get people coming back.

The Dogma thread got 5000+ views in one week, but I am not sure whether that's the Pinarello or Lionel. Lionel's threads tend to be pretty popular.

But to answer your question, no I suppose VS was intended to have more discussion of framebuilding and design and less about shopping perhaps (window or actual) than it does right now. But the nice thing is that you can change that if you want. Create some threads, ask some questions. Framebuilders are standing by now to take your calls.

But also check Smoked Out & the gallery section. A lot of framebuilding stuff going on there. Heck, there is a lot of everything here.

Tune in next week when Lionel gets a microscopic rock chip on his left chainstay, and asks the Salon what color pinstripe he should add to cover it up.

Responses range from blue, to just deal with it, to buy a new bike (Parlee, or Gaulzetti, natch), to cover it up by installing a disc brake mount.*

    Hilarity ensues.

    * The thread drift surrounding re-spacing a Pina to 135mm rear and lamenting the lack of Campy disc hubs is worth the price of admission.

A web forum is a participative place, sort of a meritocracy. Just contribute the way you want it to evolve and all will be fine as long as it stays within the boundaries set by the mods.

Let's see your latest started threads. oops there is only one :

    Let's see your join date : 11-12-2011

So in more than 3 years this is your first thread. I return the question: is that what you meant for VS ?

Atmo there is nothing wrong seeing the most popular threads in a general and/or OT section of a web forum. This is a common trend in any web forum and I don't think it lessen the validity/interest of more specific/focused discussions. I quietly read a lot the smocked out sections and frambuilding thread but it would be wrong if I was polluting these threads with useless comments and random noise.

Well... considering that a lot of customers of the high end builders are in it for the image and fashionability I see no problem there. And before people fall over me: I have no negative connotation with this whatsoever. If it was just functionality we would all be riding Giant Alu with Sora or something in that vein.

It's like a handmade coat: it's about the feeling, not the function. And that involves aesthetics.

So you could scare away all the fashionista's, but you would end up with a handful of customers.

Now if we look at VS. It's initially set up for frame building, but I bet a very fair penny on the fact that the buildrs LOVE that this is also a place to showcase their goods and get clients. People like me, Rich and Lionel. So even though VS has expanded it's purpose, I sincerely wonder if the builders would like it if all the "Shall I buy a Zank of a Zetti?" disappears.

Being a professional framebuilder is more than building a frame. Anyone with time and dedication can do that! Professional framebuilding is also about selling it... and that's where most framebuilders fail miserably.

Serious answer to your serious question.

I just looked at the titles of those two threads on my account, and noticed the titles were both dark blue - meaning that I've never looked at either one. They don't interest me in the least. And it never occurred to me that they represented something about VSalon that I don't jibe with - I just knew that from looking at the titles that I wouldn't be interested in the content. There's plenty of other stuff that I'm near-constantly hitting the refresh button for, though.

This place really can be a picker's delight and there's more than enough content across the different forums to keep me interested for a loooooong time. I just don't read what I think won't be of interest to me.

edit: oops, I guess I did peek at the $14000 bike thread. So that did interest me. A little.

It's a nice day to ride bikes and waste a little time on the forum nes pas?

As a reminder, Beatnik, the forum asked myself and the thugs....uh I meant moderators to refrain from locking threads. The result is that Vsalon membership bears the major responsibility for maintaining some sense of direction both in content and appropriate tone.

It's working soooo well. I would not kid about that.

Hey aren't Beatniks opposed to rules and organized society?

A bit of self policing goes a long way, at least with mature adults. And it seems to be working well.

Learning is hard - that's why kids get a recess break. We're all just big kids.

Once people start animated-giffing the frame forum, then maybe after school detentions should be administered.
