I've only spoken a couple of words to Rich, but I'm having a really hard time getting his son out of my head. He was super tough at the last Ballers Ride, and I know he will have fantastic memories of his dad, but he deserved to have decades more of them.
"As an homage to the EPOdays of yore- I'd find the world's last remaining pair of 40cm ergonomic drop bars.....i think everyone who ever liked those handlebars in that shape and in that width is either dead of a drug overdose, works in the Schaerbeek mattress factory now and weighs 300 pounds or is Dr. Davey Bruylandts...who for all I know is doing both of those things." - Jerk

From Rich's bio in The Process is the Inspiration:

ďI still live in my childhood zip code, but Iím always dreaming of my own private utopia where I can leave my bike unlocked on the town square, people donít talk on the phone while driving, and thereís always a tailwind for the ride home."

Rich and I were going to have breakfast together last Friday to talk shop and about a possible collaboration.
Just gutted. Such a loss. Such a sweet, talented, joyful man.

I was fortunate to have had a brief window of one-on-one time with Rich a couple years ago when he hosted me for a ride to show off some of the amazing roads near his home, and near my newly adopted home west of Philadelphia. He was one of those rare types with the ability to make you feel like an old friend right away. A great family man and eternal friend of this community for sure. Taken too soon and apparently without warning; my heart aches for his family.

I connected with Rich R. via the Salon and Richard S.

We spoke several times, and each time he impressed me as someone who gets it.

I used to work for a design agency, and I continue to work an arm's length away from designers...

Rich had a knack for working within constraints without being constrained. For some projects, it's the highest compliment.

If there's an infant or toddler in your life, buy the "LOVE" blocks... pretty much my daughters's favorite thing.

Rich's legacy will endure - such great work and a great guy...

My one interaction with Rich was a compliment on his packaging that he thanked me for. While unboxing some Sachs socks purchased by my wife, picking through layer after satisfying layer of House packaging that was executed just so, I was struck by how much he and his team wanted me to enjoy the experience of being a House customer. He has been among a small set of examples that inspires me ever since.

I just watched this whole video.
    All 48:17.
Even though I had an idea about this talent.
    I had NO idea.
I also want to keep this thread at the top of the forum. Keep it alive.
I hate the way important news gets tweeted, FB'd, Instagrame'd, and then we move on to something else. Like we are over it. I'm not.
    Thanks for posting this Richard.

I did not know Rich, but he certainly inspired me: before I started making art (which feels like a 2nd life) I would use the House Industry catalog (it was so good- great paper and amazing letters) to cut up into letters to send to people- it was my first attempt at creativity as an adult: his work was the basis of my original interest (I still work words into my paintings).

Anyways- an amazing man and I wanted to pay my respects.

    Godspeed Rich.

I am with Miss Taylor. I saw all their cool stuff on the website, but had no idea at all what a big deal the House Ind. is. Holy crap, they are out there. That was one of the most educational 48 min of my life. The dude got it and passed it on. Godspeed, Mr. Roat.

A few years ago Rich and Simon Mottram came out to the SFRCC to celebrate the Velo designs House was doing.

It was quite an amazing evening. RIP.

Like others, I haven’t been here in some time, so to pop in and learn of Rich’s passing... just devastating.

Great guy... monumental talent... wouldn’t take my money because he felt the work wasn’t necessary... incredibly generous with his time. The world is brighter because of him.
