Default Mark Cavendish's Exit From Team Sky

Rumor has it that the "Manxman" is going to be leaving Sky. While I can understand why he would have to go, I think it is a mistake on the part of the management to let him go. Alberto Contador, the greatest stage racer of his generaton has returned. Sky may not always get the top spot on the podium.

Mark does a great job of giving the sponsors value for the dollar, with his numorous stage wins. The sponsors and the fans don't have to wait until the end of a three week race to get the thrills. Him being British, on a British team does great things for British cycling in general and, reinforces the concept of a British racing team,(of course there not all British). It is within Sky's resources to create a dedicated sprint team for Mark. I think they would be poorer for it if they didn't.

Yeah, but that sprint team wouldn't be at the Tour de France...so why would he bother?

They have several riders that would get special treatment on other squads. They have two legitimate options for yellow in Wiggins and Froome, a world-class sprinter in Cavendish, a proven stage hunter in EBH, and they still have a few young guns that are waiting for their chance (Porte & Uran). They can't build a team around all of them.

They also seem to realize that Cavendish is good for British cycling, even if he doesn't ride for Sky. I'm sure they'll enforce the buy-out clause in his contract, but I'm not surprised that they're letting him go.

I bet he's pissed Team GB couldn't get him to the line in the Olympic RR.

At a rumoured 2.4 million euro salary, it will be tough for him to find a team that can take him on. Also, it not just him, but they need to either have, or buy dedicated men just for him. But, he gives good value for the money. Radioshack could use someone like him, to repair the horrific damage of their 2012 season. Maybe give the sponsors second thoughts about leaving en masse.

If I recall correctly OPQS had the resources last year to be in the running. Terpstra and Stybar could be a good leadout base.

The teams are interchangeable to me ;) But I think the Olympic disappointment (hah) probably has a lot to do with it on an emotional level.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he's in the prime of his career and there's nothing he can do but play second fiddle on a team with GT ambitions and where green jerseys and stage wins are not the focus of the team.

He's been a good team member but as a proven winner it's not hard to see why he wants out.

That is the rational part of it. But the Olympic RR was his crown jewel this year and he got shafted.

    i don't see this
    he was the leader
why didn't he call the race better??
    he saw it slipping away
he has no one to blame for the olympics but himself

OPQS has the $ and the infra structure to support this move

I completely agree with your assessment but I'm basing my armchair quarterbacking on his character.
