Default is it just me or does bmx look really really fun?

cruising the local fireroads here, i saw a group of kids on their bmx bikes go flying up berms and teaching each other how to bunnyhop a 4" rock and memories of junior high school came flooding back. one speed, one brake, a bulletproof ride, and a plastic saddle. of course, they were gawking at my full sus as much as i was longing for my youth. how the hell did i get to be two decades older than these people?????

    It IS fun.
Get yourself a 20" or a 24", build a jump, and get wild.
And then go and power slide the rear wheel thru a bunch of deep@55 puddles 'til there's no more water.
Then sit on the bars and ride backwards.
    and then...

I'm still young and dumb enough (23) to love the shit outta bmx.

Here's a part a friend and I shared in a video before I started riding the grown-up bikes a bit more and getting into racing.

    I also covet a Sunday Model C 24"

Nerd, pics and/or video will be required. Once your kid is in BMX, say goodbye to your riding schedule and plan on getting an RV to take to races.

It looks fun as fuck, but I sure don't have the stomach to deal with the learning curve at this point in my life.

Colt Fake is punk as fuck. BMX needs more of that.

Also, if anyone ever is in the Northeast Ohio area, Ray's MTB is a must.

I used to race BMX when I was a kid and it was so much fun. A buddy of mine had a track in his back yard and that's basically where we spent our summers. I had the most kickass BMX bike too. Kastan aluminum frame with Brand X bars and fork, Nuke Proof hubs, CK headset. You don't know how good you have it when you're 14.

A buddy of mine is building a pump track in his backyard and I've been perusing Craigslist for a cheap bike. Can't wait!

It's very good fun and perfect cross training for road or MTB. We have lots of old guys now who race on the local road team who are racing BMX because their kids are doing the same. These men are having a very good time.

Try it - you'll like it.

BMX rocks....the body as well. Then I got into trials. Every bit the perfect riding discipline and less injury to boot.

BMX is saving my life right now. I needed something new to hurt myself with.
We just had a meeting of the Elders on a farm up in Chesterfield last weekend. In attendance at the beer and drug fueled bonfire were two bike shop owners, a MX shop owner, a skate shop owner, Garson and I from Spooky, the owner and son of the machine shop we are using and a bunch of 13-18 year old kids. We are loosing the local teenagers to cars and video games and brakeless street riding. Street riding is turning into Razor Scootering.

Trails is dieing. Trails is talking. We are yelling. We live in the country. Hampshire and Franklin cty are full of fields. Private landowers are starting to step up, speak up and let us know- they love their communities, and they love their kids. We may not be able to build them skateparks or sell them mountainbikes, the roads are too sandy to skate. There is no downtown. BMX trails are packed dirt, dug and shaped by those who ride them. It's our collective duty, and in our own self-interest to re-build the scene, to make it stronger than ever and to export our dreams and lifestyle, to give the kids something to love, respect and feel ownership of. We need it for our communities if we want them to stay and particpate in our democracy. We need their enthusiasm and passion to fuel our businesses. We need them so that we have great places to ride after a long day of cutting metal, fixing bikes and selling helmets.
The obvious solution- build some tracks, build some trails, and teach the kids how to dig. If I had to choose between working all day and shoveling dirt all day, I'd take the dirt. Just like Punk is Whatever We Make it To Be, BMX is too. With a small patch of land, 6 shovels and a weekend of partying and camping it's possible to build an oasis of shred with 250 hours of combined labor. 7 people and 3 12 hour days of digging. That's all it takes to build a scene.
BMX died in Western MA in 1999 when the Mt Tom trails here in Easthampton were leveled. The dudes who used to build there turned into crackheads and thieves within a year, some of them are still homeless, others are dead.. With the elders gone, the groms never learned how to dig, they never learned how to build and respect the scene, generally they lost the plot. Even a few months on a 20" has changed my perspective on my own life, irrevocably for the better. As a bike company owner, as a racer, and as a citizen, the transformative power of small, cheap bikes, hard labor and community-building is something I can, will and must be involved in.

(p.s.- we are building some 20" bikes for use by children and adults in backyards and abandoned lots.)

    Mickey for president.

My father and I traveled all over midwest starting at age 10 and ending at 17 when saturday morning football practice became more important than chasing the points for the state #1 plate. My dad even bought a free agent mini and tried to get every grand child he had to race. None of them took to it. I'm having a he!! of a time getting my 5 year old to even try to learn to ride his bike. NO ONE in the neighborhood rides so he really has no motivation.

If I don't get him riding on his own this summer I'm going to have to turn in my Dad Card.

Dad died in October, but that Free Agent still hangs in Mom's basement. Might need to get it out for some motivation. Oldest son has a GT 20", I try to ride it every now and then, can't seem to keep it under me, wheel base is so short.

I'd really like a 24" cruiser to rip around the neighborhood on. Does Spooky make a 24" bmx frame/fork?

My son (4.5) has a micro mini Intense. I've talked all my buds with kids the same age into NOT buying the kids a cheap piece of shit with gears or a fucking Trek. Now my son has a little band of brothers to start shredding with. This summer, we'll be heading out to the bmx track. For now, they terrorize our neighborhood.

Momma will be left at home because she keeps on telling the boy to "be careful" and to "slow down". I hope my mariage makes it.
