Default Irrational Aesthetic Compulsions: What's "The Look" That Grabs You?

Jon Greene has been patiently putting up with my shit for almost a year now, and can attest that I am flighty, moderate maintenance, and a general douche, but in a a good way (I'm a pleasantly scented, but not irritating, douche, probably a light apricot -- as opposed to the damn near corrosive and way too acidic douche).

    Anyway.

I was convinced of 6800. So easily serviced. So available. So streamlined and modern. I could mount a Stages and go back to my watt-knotted ways.

And then I saw Zank's bike in the classifieds. The balanced S curve of a Campy shifter. The slim shining arms of a silver alloy Campy crank -- a sight that has, for 35 years of my life, said "this is the visual heart of the bike." So I tell Jon, fuck it, pull the trigger on a silver Athena 11 group. Burn the boats. It's going to look soooo good on a white bike....

Certain bike bits just grab us -- they have "the look," that, regardless of function, practicality, price, or other perfectly reasonable factors, make us want to ride the bike by their visual appeal.

So, salon, what are those bits that sink their hooks in on sight, for you?

Superbe Pro from the late 80's. On a purely visual basis, nothing else has ever rung my bell like that stuff.

as a fixed gear fanatic, the sight of simplicity of no RD hanging off the back of a bike, and a perfectly straight chainline with perfect tension do it for me.

    Silver is splendid.

For me the high-water mark is Campagnolo 9v and 10v, more silver than carbon.

53/39 looks way more serious business than 50/34. And a silver 53 over a black 39 looks even more boss.

Low profile rims (deep dish hoops hog the profile of a bike) and silver spokes.

Classic bend bars, w/ drops damn close to level. Brake lever tips even with the drops. No clutter (GPS, HRM, power meters, cyclometers, electronic countermeasures, etc.).

The clearly defined cross genre appeal of a true race bike that is hard to put into words. It just stands out.

Simple, timeless, classic. That can span eras and design evolution. I think the late 90s alloy Pinarellos that Ullrich rode are just as timeless as the 70s Colnagos under Merckx. I just don't want anything that looks particularly dated to a trend. (Ahem, Team Once Giant TCRs...) Functional, but not without some nod to form.

That typically means metal, but I even think carbon can be tastefully done.

This, for example, started this way...

    Stopped here on the journey....

And here's where its ended up, quality of the background aside...

17* stems on horizontal TT frames with classic shaped bars and 10sp Campy. Can't not stare.

There is nothing irrational about my aesthetic compulsons. :)

Clean, simple, classic; take the best of the contemporary and edit out the crap
then add a splash of something slightly retro to demonstrate you understand the history too.

This is my obsession right now. Silver, 32 spoke hubs , fat gum walls, anodized box rims. Everything is right in this photo.

Pretty much most of them in the RAIN BIKES thread.

Specifically, level tt, black/gray ano box rims, polished hubs, fenders... mmmmmm

Campagnolo Silver hubs, nemesis golden tickets and traditional bars. None of which I'd ever known about this till I started here.

that fork crown looks like the one Cherubim uses - is it a proprietary thing, or something that was standard as part of the Max tubeset?

e: right now, carbon frames with flat top tubes are a major fetish of mine. The new Giant-Shimano propels excite me way more than they should.

    Still discovering what really excites me framebuilding-wise, but there are certain types of wheel that I always love to see;
    - Mavic Ceramic 26" cross-country rims laced to XTR M950 hubs with black spokes & nipples.
    - Mavic R-SYS SLRs (none of that single-coloured-spoke or white-hub nonsense, please).
    - Campagnolo Omega Hardox rims laced to silver Record hubs with silver spokes & nipples.
