Default How My Bicycles Are Made

Des Horsfield has placed his video, Imperfection Is Perfection, on Vimeo for a 30 day free viewing. If my dates are correct, it was produced in 2008 after he (Des) spent a year on and off filming me in the studio as well as at some race venues.

    Thanks Richard -

Watching that was both a privilege and a life lesson - appreciate your sharing!

Having both an early Sachs road bike and a team cyclecross bike, like Rabo mentioned I get it.....

    Enjoy the day,

    KJ

That never gets old, no matter how many times I watch it.

Very elucidating, thanks for posting it. I'd never seen that before (though I've heard about its existence for years), and yet I've personally paraphrased one of the comments it contains:

A number of times I've had fellow cyclists ask me "Why do you love steel so much?" or "Why did you want to get a steel bike?" and I've always told them "I didn't want a steel bike per se; I wanted a Richard Sachs bike."

I had not seen that since the show in Portland.
I think I get it more this time around.
    Thanks

This is a good video to show to artists. There is a work ethic that resonates with creative artists, and for students, provides them with some great models for thinking about one's process, destination and a concept of what a "finished" work means. Lots of cross-pollination between the arts and considered construction like e-richie does.

This is a good observation, and it is well stated.

That was very good Richard, thank you.

One thing that stood out for me:

My dad would say of himself, and it holds true for me also: "jack of all trades, master of none". I'm a very technical person, and I can do almost anything, but a master of any trade skill - i am not.

The bit where you reveal that filing the dropout V is dependent on how new your file is, and you have to adjust for the wear. I have found myself in similar situations with drill bits, saw blades, sandpaper belts, etc - and thought that the variation in my work was showing my ammeter skills, but hearing the same from a master of a craft is super interesting to me and gives new perspective. cool.

Thank you for sharing that Richard. A lot of life lessons and wisdom packed into those 28 minutes, not to mention some beautiful-looking bikes. I'm sharing it with my daughters.

In the zone. No shame in articulating that. Or in that people would want to own a bike crafted in that manner. Like.

I dug this. Thanks for sharing. Been wanting to watch this film for a long time and it didn't disappoint. Gonna have to watch it a few more times before the month is up and then buy the DVD.

Donít want to take anything away from this thread but I feel the way the RIH video shows the process is so similar to the above.
There are no shortcuts. Just skill, and process.
    World championships as the result.

I bought the DVD at the Richmond, Virginia NAHBS way back in 2010.
I've watched it many times over the years.
    Great video!
