I thought I saw the Raleigh Heron logo being stamped out on the chainring? Wonder if this was done at the old giant Raleigh factory in the UK?

Yes I believe so. There is a documentary on the history of Raleigh, called Pedaling Dreams: The Raleigh Story (it is on YouTube.) Excerpts from this film are included among a lot of other archival footage.
