Default Honjo fender question - drill before or after powdercoat?

New build is going to have 35mm Honjos. Should they be drilled to fit before going to powdercoat, or can than be done afterward without cracking the finish? Thx.

I have never had fenders powder coated but they have to be hung to be coated and baked so there needs to be a hole. Powder is tough but it can chip around the edge of a hole if you are not careful while you drill.

First- saves nasty surprises, especially if your fenders need any additional work to get the fit dialed.

Are you planning to install the fenders yourself?

No way jose. I'll ask the builder to fit and drill them, send them off with the frame for powdercoat, and then do the final install.

Good -- provided, of course, the builder knows how to install them and has done it before.

I sent JB a set of un-drilled 35's to paint with my Kirk. In a good natured way he dressed me down because he said he had no way to hold them while he painted. Of course, they came back flawless...

Post paint fitting wasn't so bad...tape the drill locations first and use a small bit & Dremel to make a pilot.

Still better to fit and drill before paint if you have that opportunity available to you.

the coolest thing about sizing & fitting honjo fenders (particularly if you've never done it before) is the littany of new curse words and phrases you make up while doing so.

I would fit t hem all the way before paint so that you know the sequence of events and what additional hardware you may need. Also, get lots of leather washers, they are essential to installing honjos well.
