How's the chin strap on Kask helmets? Anything worth noting about it?
It's stout. I think they describe it as Eco-leather or something. It's not just nylon webbing with a buckle and took a few rides to break in. Now I don't really think about it.

Agree, the Kask I used to have had the Eco-leather strap and once it broke in I thought it was much more comfortable than the traditional nylon strap. Damn, this thread is making me want to get another Kask....

I just got back into a Specialized (Airnet specifically) after a year hiatus in a Giro Aeon (crashed out of commission) and a Lazer Helium (that I could NOT stand. Uncomfortable, loud wind noise, heavy, I could go on), and I could not be happier. Well vented, I think it looks pretty rad, and the shape fits my head rather nicely. That said, the straps aren't adjustable so I have to wear the chin strap a little tighter than I'd like to prevent it from riding up my chin.

I have Smith Overtake and Forefront helmets. I've not noticed the Overtake to be noticeably hotter than anything else (I also have a Giro Atmos and a Spec somethineorother as throwdown and loaners). I like the fit of the Smith helmets and they seem to be quite well made. We've had a record hot summer on the front range and the Smiths have been fine, no worse than anything else. As someone else observed, the Smiths have a large number of tiny vents as opposed to fewer larger vents.

I like the look of the Kask helmets but there aren't any dealers in my area and I prefer to try helmets on my melon head before buying.

I remember the first time I put a Prevail on...this bugged me so badly. Then I got used to it. Then I got an LG Course....and now I appreciate the non-adjustable straps.

Y'all aren't talking about the most important issue. Will I be able to stuff my sunglasses upside down in the front vents?

im loving my glow in the dark orange poc, i had to get used to the look of the thing but once its out of my side its all cool !
living in perth w.a. we get quite a bitt of stinking hot wheater so air flow was number 2 after fit being number 1, i went all out and bought a mips unit, i figured i might as well go bankrupt. i like it a lot more than the prevail i had before.

This is why we get along so well.

Kask Protone - Yes for Oakley Radarlocks and Radar EV. Partial yes for Spy Screws (they stick out a little).

    Bell Volt - Yes

    LG Course - Yes

    Giro Synthe - Yes-ish

    Met Rivale - Not really

    Lazer Helium/Genesis - Not really

Lazer Z1 - Never made it far enough to test

POC Octal - Room for 3 or 4 pairs

And yes, I've tried all those helmets recently. Some never made it out of the store (POC). Some got returned (Met). Some got stuck in the back of a closet after years of use or unfortunate crash testing (Bell and Lazer). And some got sold after I realized they're really good helmets but don't fit my head (Synthe and LG Course). I'll be picking up a second Protone soon.

Did I mention the Protone is awesome?

Thatwas an important brand jump factor. The Lazer could NOT get along with sunglasses in the vents. Or on my face, for that matter, including sunglasses made by Lazer for godsakes...

I find the Protone to be best-fitting helmet I've ever worn, though in the past I usually only bought $100 models (e.g., Pneumo, Genesis). The chin strap is awesome. That said, for me it does not ventilate as well as others. On a really hot day, I'd be tempted to wear the Genesis, even though its straps suck in comparison.

I agree completely. It is the most comfortable helmet I have ever worn.

I like my Catlike Mixino. When the sun hits it just right, I get a crown halo just like the medieval saints with the golden halo. It helps me stop whining about suffering on the bike.

I was in Michigan for two days and I borrowed a buddy's Bell Venture yesterday as I stupidly forgot the pads for my own..... Honestly, it was the best fitting helmet I ever wore. I have no idea where it was in the hierarchy of Bell bike helmets but I will be looking more at Bells.

It was pretty much like not wearing one and that's saying something in my mind.

After tonights cross practice, which was a scorcher, the Smith helmet really is not that bad. Having said that I really, really like the fit on my brothers Kask Mojito. Any real reason to bump up to the Protone other than #balleurstatus?

    Better sunglasses fit and aerodynamics.

I have to admit... that is the one thing that I really do not like about the Smith helmet. For the life of me, I can not get my glasses to stay in the little slot things... they always fall out.

I have an old Rudy helmet with a bug net and its an open nylon mesh. I dont believe breathability was a problem, however it was a pain in the ass to get my sunglasses to sit in the vents.

My wife got a MET Rivale when we were in Provence last month. Can't say I've seen them around here, but hers is really nice. Fits well, very light.

The Rivale looks nice. Curious about the general shape of the helmet: round / int / oval? Interested in the Parabellum or Lupo but no local dealers so I'd be ordering w/o having tried it on. Many of the Bell and Lazer helmets would be in the oval category. Thanks
