    Default Gopro cameras

Discuss please. My son wants one and I have been eyeballing these since the cool videos have been posted shot with such. I just dunno which to buy. Deyz expensive for this farm-livin' hillbilly. And so many different models too. What's the skinny on Gopro or alternatives that you like?

    Thanks,

    Clyde

Personally, the contour seems to provide better resolution from what I've seen

Zimmerman can probably confirm this but the newest GoPro is dope. The shape leaves a LOT to be desired though.

if you want to look like a teletubby, the gopro is great. Sometimes I would like a helmet cam, but I'm not wearing a brick on my helmet

we bought the gopro heroHD for my father as a birthday/hannukah gift a couple seasons ago. it's perfect for filming the grandkids on skis, bikes, and in the pool. We don't get carried away with editing or saving the videos, though i did string together a bunch of clips of my then 20 month old son skiing and posted it to youtube so it could live on after the computer is gone.

we just used it this weekend on the ski slopes. it's fun to see what i look like to others after 25 years of skiing. i used it during cx season a few years ago. it's fun to relive the crashes that happened nearby, but otherwise, i haven't looked at the videos again.

unless your son plans on filming some really great/unique stuff and spend the time to edit it on the (super) computer, i'd say go with something middle of the road, or better yet, find someone who is tired of theirs and buy it on the cheap.

Funny was just thinking today that it would be great to record time-lapses of dirt climb one-off rides I want to remember. Descents would maybe be fun to watch for personal consumption... or skiing... other stuff seems pretty boring. However yes I would have a hard time ever putting on one my helmet. If I still took a car to the track it would be a no-brainer. Wide-angle seems nice.

1st gen Contour Roam is on closeout for 99 FRNs at Target.com. Much better form factor IMHO. You can also flash the firmware to record at 60fps@720p, where it was only originally advertised to work at 30fps.

My wife bought me one for Christmas. I've been telling her for years that she would not believe what I do in the woods, and now I can provide video. But snow and the flu have intervened, so I can't give any ride report. Cool present, anyway.

I got a heroHD a couple years ago and have done some fun things with it. Resolution was ok and low-light was a bit of an issue. I've heard the latest gen is a ton better. The gopro can be fun for time lapse photography, esp if you add in one of those eye fi cards.

^^ that's interesting. it makes a pretty big difference though if you go to vimeo and actually watch it in HD than watch the embedded video.

I have a Contour GPS and it sucks balls.

GoPro has way more mounting options than anyone else.

If I were spending my dollars, it'd be a GoPro.

Why do people feel the need to list all of their bikes in their signature?

I do use these a ton for work and they are what they are, nothing else other than the contour does the job that it does at such a low price point.
The most important question I have for you is what would he plan on using it for? and based on the answer to this,is it the appropriate camera?
you can PM me if you like.
    go to
Eric Zimmerman Cinematographer DP and check out the "fallen star" project under features, tons of go pro footage in that project,I had 30 cameras shooting on one of the days 8 of them go pros all placed in spots that where unsafe for humans.
