Default Friends don't let friends ride cheap tires.

My usual riding partners are riding -what I call- garden hose variety tires on otherwise decent equipment.
Attempted many times to persuade them to spend just a little more money and get -what I consider- nice tires (25 mm Michelin pro, Schwalbe one ,etcetera).
The usual response is " these lasted 3000 miles".
I know I should just drop it, but, if you ever persuaded someone to ride better tires, how did you do it?
ps, Almost the same thing is seeing people buy a new bike after 5 years, where, putting the money towards nice wheels and tires would end up being so much better.

The same way I sell someone a set of wheels.

"I ride them for a reason. Don't believe me? Borrow them for a day."

Local guy who rides cheap crappy tires, rides them beyond when they should be replaced, and gets flats all the time. I've ridden past him more times than I can remember and he knows not to ask.

How cheap are we talking? Unless they're running something really brutal it's not going to make that much of a difference. Even the stuff on the Duro or Kenda end of the spectrum is pretty ok these days.

Talk them in to putting a good tire on the front (they last forever, right?? and that's the tire for braking, so it's safer!!) and let them discover how the rear tire doesn't fkn grip any more.

Unless they are asking for advice I'm pretty sure your friends do not want to hear your rants about their tires.

Obsessing about equipment is the fastest way to spoil a ride and one of the reason roadies are just a bunch of annoying people.

First, if my friends are faster than me they are really frienemies.

Second, they damn well better be using cheap tires.

And offer to install them. That is what real friends do. I have also found when they go to the LBS to have them replaced in the future they usually say "just get me the same thing".

    Problem solved.

    110% Agree.

Unless someone’s ride has a quick release lever or seat bag open, mind your own business.

Their priorities are not yours. It's always frustrating when there is something great to share, but that's the way of things.

slippery slope here to persuading them on all their equipment...since we all know the happiness that "just a little more money" can bring

bike-splaining...don't be that guy. We are all doing it wrong in some way. No one is telling me to shave my legs, so I'll keep quiet about my fancy tires, metal bikes, and so much more.

That said, I doubled down on my 'cumbersome' 28s and instead chose the 650x48 fendered Firefly for this morning's ride, albeit the Monday slow ride. Curious eyes see that it works better than fine, no need to preach.
