May have run its course. I sorta stopped reading it first thing Friday about a year ago, and now fewer and fewer builders are jumping on every week.
. It is a bit of work doing all the pics and posting. I appreciate all the efforts the guys have put in over the years. Thanks

    ALLOT of them quit building.

My stuff is all on my SO page, FB or my blog, so I figure that's good enough saturation

Not as much discussion following the posts, so I imagine some folks just redirected their efforts. Some of us seem to be carrying on.

I'll admit I rarely look at them now. How many pictures of brazing do you really need to see? I'm also not in the market for a new ride any time soon. And when I am, I already know what I want.

    Why?
    Was the market saturated?
Easier to use your (obvious) skills in a different job?
Is custom no longer needed with the current bikes on offer?

The market indeed was(is) saturated, everyone and their brother wanted to live the dream. I think quite a few of them figured out Ramen noodles get old eventually.

Framebuilding skills don't transfer to a mainstream industrial job as well as most people think, so if you learned only what you need to build frames with hand files and a torch, you don't have the skills required for 90% of the metal shops in the US. Plus, most of the hipster f'builder types would drag up the second you showed them a carbon arc.

Custom is still needed/wanted, and the current offerings from the big companies make custom look like a bargain.

These cats (Edoz, Steve, and Eric) are right; the cord has snapped.

There was a beyond false economy for well over a decade, maybe two of them.

People were playing at craft, never made it into the trade, and then the future happened.

The internet era has chewed up a lot of pretenders and left them by the wayside.

The quality and quantity and even frequency of participation on FNL and S.O. ebbs and flows.

The present is likely a true representation of where things are.

The Y2K builder bubble burst - that's the bulk of it, IMO - there are plenty of us guys who are busy, don't get me wrong.

We lost allot of the lugged bike guys along the way when allot of people decided their next bike would have discs, IMO.

Sadoff made 109 frames last year, so some are busy, many are not.

Lots of good tools for sale out there right now.

As of last winter when my wife ordered a bike, Firefly had a waiting list of 15 months, so is titanium also shifting (no pun) clients' attentions?

Also, in the early 2000 big brands either offered city bikes, MTB or racing road bikes and that was about it. They were also in a loudness war as far as logo and shitty graphics were concerned At that time it made a lot of sense to go custom when you wanted something different...or classy.

Then a few years ago the fixed gear trend, then "Gravel" happened and the manufacturers realized the modern cyclist is not necessarily looking for the bike that gets you a yellow jersey in july or a medal at the olympic games, nor does he want to become a rolling billboard. They have done their homework in the graphic department and have been expanding their catalog year after year and are now covering almost every niche you can think of,. The other (cargo bikes, XXXL sizes, ...) being covered by dedicated brands. That doesn't leave a lot of rooms for the custom bike industry.

I think it's more like we did the homework and they copied it.

That was the playbook when I entered the trade, and it lasted that way until at least the early 1990s.
Now (since the turn of the century, really) I believe it's more as I commented. They drive the bus.

    Good discussion.
    Thanks.
I was looking at a frame hanging in my shop the last couple-three years.
Looking inside the head tube at the tt/dt junction,
wondering if anyone has some good shots of what this should look like?
Probably difficult to shoot, and not very sexy to most.
    I always scan FNL,
but I understand why it has shrunk.

If there's one thing a frame maker or fan shouldn't do it's condescend to the mass market bicycles now available.
Aspiring to their quality level and design may be a better path.

I get the one at a time for the client thing.
And the this one is made special for you and your desires and needs thing.

Past that, however, one still has to be skilled and be able to produce fine designs that work across all spectrums.

This ^ was once the domain of the rank and file frame tradesman.
    That ship sailed by Y2K.

With precious few exceptions, the manufactured bicycles are better than the maker ones.

I have an incoming Zanconato and I actually wonder if it might be my last custom handmade bike by a small shop. That would be sad but Iím downsizing the fleet, not upsizing. Less is more for me nowadays. Two gone this year and not missed.

A decade ago I was a big fanboy of the custom world of bikes but today less so. Iím glad the old stalwarts are still here. Iím thinking in particular of Richard Sachs and Tom Kellogg, both of whom I remember from my earliest days in cycling in the early 1980s and now am lucky enough to call friends and riding partners. My rides with these guys on bikes they masterfully designed and built themselves remain high points of my riding life.

I hope the world of handmade bikes continues to thrive but Iím sure it will shrink. That might not be a bad thing as long as that world includes masters like these.
