Default February 17 to 23 Cross Bike, Mountain Bike, Dirt Grinder Bike, and Ski Reports

ok this was from yesterday, but we may as well get the party started early
right? sunday i took another trip to Fahnestock for three hours of good
fun, and hit up the captain lawrence brewery after. i've introduced this
cross country skiing activity to about four good pals now and they love it.

i spotted this woodpecker on the side of the trail and immediately offered
him a few advils, and a shot of my whiskey but he was too busy.

I believe that's a Pileated Woodpecker @DarrenCT. Kind of elusive here.

Engaged the fat front with 29+ in the rear for a "Road" ride post nap after spending the morning and most of the afternoon shoveling all of the snow off our roof. #takethatcrossfit

Sorry Darren, we didn't get enough snow for skiing, so I had to settle for an hour long recovery spin around the beach.

You know, if you removed the insulation from the attic, you could save yourself a lot of that snow removal effort.

    Sunshine !

Commute splitted in two. Part ride (50km), part train. Ride ended in a 15km time trial in order to catch the train. Although the wind was not particularly complicit, I think I did a personnal best on this one . Arrived 2 minutes before the train. I should do the full 105km tomorrow if weather permit.

Always have this song in the head when riding in such weather.

I haven't been able to ride much over the past couple months because the weather up here in the Catskills has been far beyond awful--and I'm saying that from the perspective of someone who has ridden through every winter since 2003.

That said I just wanted to note that there is a whole bunch of awesome new posts and great pictures up on the Riding the Catskills blog from VSalon member globecanvas, check it out!

4 hours in the east bay hills. Too bad I don't have every Monday off, I could get used to this. The hills are trying to green up around here but there's just not much water, despite one good series of storms last week. Here's the top of Norris Canyon.

I think you're right. Those can get pretty big. My folks live not far from Fahnestock state park and have noticed a lot of Pileated woodpeckers in their yard in the last few years. Seems like they are flourishing for some reason, or maybe just becoming less shy.

I hope so, they bang their heads on trees all day.

Went out to Fahenstock yesterday too and almost called you, Darren. I thought you were spending the whole weekend up in NP. Got over 6 hour of XC ski in this weekend. First good weekend of outdoorsiness in weeks. Maybe Minnewaska next week. Hopefully I can get the binding I blew up fixed before the weekend (I seem to break my skis once a season).

    Is it safe? (Sunday)

Excellent markings at a Long Island State park I had to sneak in to because clearly what you should be doing on a day off is sitting on your ass watching TV, not spending it outside. (the markings actually made sense, but they look funny out of context)

About halfway down this rutted icy hill--about as far as you can see in this photo--I destroyed the crap out of another ski binding. Unless it is fresh powder I think I need to find a new local place to go because the snowshoe and boot tracks all over the xc ski trails made them really sucky.
