Default Favorite CX shoes...and least favorites

I'm not asking what the "best" is just your favorites and your shoe failures.

Shimano shoes buckles do break easily. I broke mine twice and now have a pair with mismatched buckles colors, Mathieu van der Poel probably lost count.

My Fizik MTB shoes have soles that are so slippery I think they must have teflon coated them. Also, the Boa closure system would definitely not hold up to the nastier side of cross conditions.

They are Ok as long as you are on the bike.

I've had too many shimano buckles fail to be worth counting, and I've also had the soles develop holes after a single season. Not recommended.

On the other hand I have a pair of Northwave that have been my go-to dirt and winter shoe for four years now with no problems at all, including a couple of rough spills on asphalt and more than I can count on dirt/sand. From a "bang for your buck" perspective they are second to none in my opinion. They've since changed their naming but the ones I have look most like the current Scream 2

I really like my Empire VR90's. The rubber on the soles provides good traction on run ups and doesn't slide around on the pedal if you're pedaling unclipped or getting ready for a dismount.

I really like the lacing system when the course is dry or at least it's warm out. The downside to that is that I've seen people have to cut through the laces to get out of the shoes when it's one of those frozen mud days.

I really liked my Shimano XC90. I have 2 pair and still keep them around for backup. I'm now running the new S-Phyre 9 with the BOAs. They are also excellent.

I did not like the Sidi Drakos. For some reason the inside of the right shoe's tongue area would rub the top of my toes. I still have them around and they look like new since they were barely used.

My wife really likes the VR90, but hasn't used them in sever mud.

Used the middle level Sidis (I don't remember the model name) for many years.
Never broke anything. The pin in the buckle likes to creep out over time but a small bump with a hammer puts it right back in. They always worked extremely well. In mud. Scrambling over rocks. The usual stuff.

Northwave Hammer CX with a set of rugby cleats up front for the cold slop. They are great for keeping your feet dry for at least a few laps and have a bit of neoprene sock to keep the mud outside, stiff enough to ride not too stiff to run and they haven't killed me despite my bad habit of stepping on top of barriers and being a total klutz on muddy steps.Way less than 100 bucks from the usual sources. Plus mine were official ATMO gear that came with Twizzlers, the bloodstains washed right out and they smelled like winning.

My Northwaves have been solid and the Boa closures have held up well after two years but my gripe is that they're narrower than my Specializeds. I have big feet though (12) so your mileage may vary.
