Default Fat Bikes now allowed on groomed trails in New Paltz

Being a xcountry ski nut, I have mixed feelings about this, but as long as
the fat bikers play nice, this is an awesome idea. The Mohonk Moutain House
has probably 50+ miles and is renting bikes.

I'll be there for the holidays and I'll be renting fat bikes from The Bike Depot
    in downtown NP.

Obviously you don't need groomed trails, but New Paltz is awesome so I thought
    I'd mention this.

Thanks for the heads up reminder to sharpen my pole tips for spear fishing fat tire calimari at Mohonk. This is a terrible idea.

Are they being taken on ski lifts and allowed to ride straight down? Snow DH always seemed like the fatbike's true calling.

No lifts at all, just perfectly groomed and marked trails. Hopefully everything works out.
I'll probably try the fat bike once and ski most of the time.

I've seen this at A Basin. It was late season but was funny as hell you watch the carnage of the down hill snow races.

Do bikes really mess up the trail that much? It's not the type of thing a Floridian is likely to be passionate about.

Excellent! Didn't think of them when considering how to get out onto the snow this season. All I need is two pair of kiddie snowshoes and it's a field trip.

Is there enough white stuff up there yet to merit a trip up from LI?

They started grooming today apparently. Keep the cold weather and a bit more snow, and we will set for winter activities. I can't wait to get my new Seven Eversnow SL.

I presume the fat tire tracks will be kept away from groomed xc ski tracks.

Are all the trails you normally ride on their grounds? or are some in New Paltz but not on Mohonk's property?
And, do you know if you have to pay the daily fee to use Mohonk's trails?

Hey everybody, I'm one of the owners of the Bicycle Depot and I figure I can help with some info here...
We will be renting fat bikes but so far only have 3 of the 8 we've ordered. We should have all of them in a few weeks (in theory).
The real reason I'm posting here is to try and disseminate some information to keep all the winter trail users happy. Right now the Mohonk Mountain House groomed trails are cool to ride on but you can only ride on the trails you can be on any other time of the year. That means no riding around Lake Mohonk, Eagle Cliff, and up to Skytop. You will have to pay to ride there just like you would if you were skiing.
The Mohonk Preserve has agreed to allow bikes on its trails this winter too, but they still have some specifics to iron out. You will also have to pay to play on their property too unless you are a season pass holder (which is highly recommended - you'll pet your money's worht I'd you live anywhere in the vicinity and they are a really good operation to support).
Some specific trail use rules have been drafted (and possibly even posted around the Mountain House property) and they are following guidelines set by other property owners who allow fat bike use on ski trails such as staying out of the groomed tracks, not riding when it's too warm, etc.
I should have some paperwork at the shop soon with all the nitty gritty details so feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I'm hoping this turns out well and is as awesome as I think it could be because it is a damn spectacular place to ride a bike and I'd like to see what all the fuss is about fat bikes since I'm a awful skier.

Sorry if this seemed like a sales pitch at all...

    You're welcome, Christian.
There are some very cool people who gave the winter-fat-bike-thing the green light and I would love to see it work out. It's worth noting that one of our best customers got pretty pissy when we told him the good news because he was afraid it would screw with his skate skiing. Point is - it would be nice to approach riding fat bikes on the ski trails with some humility lest we piss everybody off.
Now if we can only get Minnewaska State Park on board...

For sure. I love xc, but classic. Can't stand those skate guys. (Narcissism of little differences!). :)

Cool, we tried to get the forest services to allow grooming on trails up here but it did not work.

Hats off to you for getting this done.

The classic ski tracks are what they are the most worried about. They are two parallel troughs about 6" apart and even in good firm snow they can be fragile. Snow shoes can destroy them in a hurry. A fat bike could certainly do the same if ridden carelessly. Combine that with the nature of classic skiers being fanatical or old or both and it gets heated in a hurry. Where they probably intend for the fat bikes to ride is on skate ski trails that look more like your average alpine run, they will hold up much better to tire traffic and unless it's pretty warm won't leave a significant track.

Central Oregon Trail Alliance is planning on building fat bike specific trails here in Bend this winter. Some people are really excited about it.

    Any update for 2015?

When I called last season to see where riding was allowed, I got a "it's not a done-deal response" regarding allowing bikes on the trails when there's snow on them.

I just finished watching Meru so now I want to ride up something with snow on it!

Actually, the Mohonk Mountain House it's definitely on board with allowing fat bikes on their trails with the same rules as last winter. Plus the Mountain House actually put in some single track last year that's pretty fun (though not terribly technical or long) and open to anybody riding the trails up there. For a resort that makes its money catering to some very wealthy guests, they do an awful lot for us common cyclists.
