From the video: "50/10 is probably bigger than 53 /11, we will have a look at that later."

The moment they allowed calculators in elementary school something was lost.

On an 12-25 or an 11-28 the 12th speed doesn't interest me at all but go an 11-32 an extra gear at the low end might be nice.

My big worry is that 12 speed means a chain and cassette that wear out faster and are more fragile. Does adopting mean I'll be buying new chains more often than I do now?

Someone on this forum once described a 10 mile 3% downhill somewhere in France and I'll say that I'd love to fly along in a group riding that. But I'll give up that thrill to be able to have extra gears the other 99% of the time.

i agree. 11-32 covers the range. but there's gap there at the low end that an extra cog could breach. -Mike G

Is this supposed to be a professional racing group or something for enthusiasts?

Is Marcel Kittel going ride this?

I think a sprinter will take 55/11 over 50/10 any day.

I don't think anyone buy them at that price. I don't.

    people riding bikes.

That said, I don't think an higher gear would target a sprinter. It is more something a big rouleur could use to make a difference in a long descending false flat. This etap 12 drivetrain was showcased on the bike of Nils Pollit, you know that guy:

The probable biggest reason for an higher gear ratio is marketing.

Yes, definitely not pro gearing, even if ratios can be fiddled with to get close.

I guess what I am trying to puzzle out is the meaning of a brand's top tier group being designed to work best for wealthy cycling enthusiasts.

There must be profit to be made in the stratosphere.

I would rather see Rival eTap and Shimano 105 Di2.

That's smart IMO. The pro's aint buying the gear, not enough to keep the lights on anyhow.

Agree 100% on lower tier electric groups.

I'm looking forward to eTap coming to MTBs, it'll make it so easy to switch back and forth from a geared to singlespeed set up!

And there you go. Smaller cogs and chains wear faster as well.

Considering it's just a working prototype with leaked photos and no official statement at this point, I'd say it's not actually made for anyone other than the testers.

Well that makes a difference. If a prototype, it doesn't have to make sense.

SRAM likes to "leak" stuff and create buzz, if i'm not mistaken that's been their publicity strategy for a while now.
I'm wondering if this means that a new quarq is coming out and the dzero is going to get discounted. If so, great, because I want a PM but I want a PM with a warranty. :)
Quarq's seem to have survived their early growing pains and become one of the most compelling options.

Big fan of Quarq - simple design, can be re-calibrated by the end user, cheap, widely available batteries.

I'd love to buy a lower-end electronic group but I don't think they can be sold that cheaply. Most of the cost is in the electronic components not in the mechanical construction.

Why is everyone sort of getting worked up over the gearing? I’m sure there will be options.
