Default Dirt road bikes for kids??

We went for a family ride on dirt roads this afternoon. It has real potential, but also highlighted the shiteness of the current kids bikes.

One of three is OK, being a dual suspension mountain bike that would have been cutting edge 25 years ago.

The other two are 24" wheel mountain bikes. One of them is made out of pipes rather than tubes, and the other is made out of bars rather than pipes. It is absurdly, heavy in a way that defies all logic. It's like it's made out of anti-matter. And it must weigh more than half its owner's body weight. The kids aren't yet big enough for 26" wheel bikes in general. They also aren't really heavy enough to get any travel (or benefit) out of suspension.

So any advice on kids gravel bikes? Do people just use cyclocross bikes? That's what I'm thinking at the moment

We've paid a total of nothing for the three bikes they've got at the moment, so there is that, but there was an element of getting what we paid for today...a 60km ride became a 10km ride quite quickly.

7 Best Kids Cyclocross Bikes (2", 24", and 26" Cross Bikes) - Rascal Rides

It's not like kids need anything bigger than CX tires. They are small and light.

When we were kids we used to ride 550A and 600A road bicycles. They were equipped with some balloon road tires roughly 37mm wide. We were riding gravel before there was a name on it or Jan Heine was boasting the merit of large volume tires on a website.

Hutchinson is still producing tires for these kinds of bikes:

I cannot say enough good things about these bikes. My kids ride them on the fire roads all over the area.

I've just ordered a Giant arx 24 for my son. It looks ace and probs loads lighter than his current bike.

I just picked up my second Woom for my kids - first a balance bike (the Woom 1) and now a 16" pedal bike (Woom 3). They have options up to 26" wheels. It's definitely a better option than many of the kids bikes out there with a fairly light aluminum frame, real wheels, and kid-specific components (short reach brake levers, etc). Tire size is plenty for dirt roads - we're actually learning to pedal on grass in the back yard right now.

My plan is to stick to kids-specific bikes until they are ready for something full size, and then, if they are into it, look into a real drop bar bike.

I went with the Woom 3 for my then-five year old. Perfect bike for her. Couldn't believe the POS kids bikes on the market. Most seemed like they were heavier than my bikes and had POS cranks with coaster brakes that only frusted her. I take her on pavement, grass, and packed gravel trails. She loves it. My three year old is getting the itch to ride a big kid bike, and I think we'll start him off on a Woom or similar 12 inch bike.

I was looking at one of those when I got shown a photo of this:

24 wheeled road bike, from a gardening centre no less! $40. Needs a bit of TLC, and some parts from the parts stash but 1 of 2 kids bikes is basically sorted.

That's pretty cool too. I would happily have bought something like this too if available. My hand was forced with the Giant as a retailer in the UK was putting them out at 20% off. Everybody else was full retail.
