Default city bike disc rim choice.

All this talk about disc cross bikes got me to thinkin' what rims I will use on a Sycip mixte that Jeremy is building for my wife as a secret B'day present (don't say a word!)

It is a disc only ladies frame that I intend to use 32mm Conti touring tires on, with the option of going up to 38mm if she wishes.

Jeremy suggested Velocity Blunt or Salsa Semis (*to be laced up to Alfine hubs) but I wonder how big, wideass 29er rims work with 'skinny' 32mm tires - does anyone see a problem with this?

I am choosing 29er rims because I want brake-surfaceless rims for a clean look - otherwise, I would likely use skinnier rims. Wide rims will change the shape of the tire when mounted too, won't it?

Any thoughts? Any other suggestions? No braking surface and silver or black only. Likely no decals or low key ones, if any.

    Thanks!

Over at Palo Alto Bicycles I saw a Civia with Alfine hydraulic brakes/hubs and some DT rims. One of those with a center kickstand please :p

I love my Stan's 29er rims. I have 4 sets of them. The rims are all black or all white. They are wide, but I have ridden with 23mm tires with pleasure. The tire cross section is better than with standard rims (less pinched shape).

you can get the velocity aeroheads unmachined, i.e. with solid sidewalls.

    See Velocity - Content Template

Not sure about actual availability, best to call and check, or have someone call and check (not sure if you'd have them built in the US, or there).

Although I realize they're "only" 23.5mm, I've been nothing but delighted with the Velocity VXC rims on the commuting wheelset I had built last autumn. I run 28s in the three seasons, and 35mm Nokian W106s in the winter. Shown here with my 34mm cross tires (and Alfine dyno hub).

Yes, Renold - this is my conclusion too. I am not sure how wide rims affect skinny tires, but Jeff from Velocity assured me that it would work too. Why doubt the experts, right?
