Default Bitchin' about crap Velonews writing

I posted this ATH, so sorry for the repeat here, but this just pisses me off, coming out of a supposedly respectable cycling mag.

Just got a Velonews, Sept/Oct2020 issue. Sitting down reading an article from The Photo Vault about the 1989 Giro (p14). And two really stupid errors jump out at me. First the unnamed writer mentions about Lemond winning his 'third-career' Tour title in 1989. Well, no, it was his second win. Third was in 1990.

And then talking about Fignon, writer states, 'and while he claimed three Tour wins,..." Uh, no again, he won two, 1983 and 1984. That's it.

What is with these bozos? How hard is it to get those facts straight? If I could find a comments section on their website, I'd bitch, but I can't find one. This is supposed to be a top-notch cycling rag?

Nope, Wiki looks good for both of them. How hard would it have been to take a quick look there?

Over the past 6 months or so I feel like Velonews has really tanked. Not sure if it has to do with Pocket Outdoor Media, Chris Case leaving or something else but man I'm just not a fan.

I'm old enough to have been a subscriber when Velonews was started in tabloid form and yes, they have come to suck badly. I just can't quit 'em, however, so I subscribed for their $50 combo platter for a year to give them one last chance. The overall TdF coverage wasn't too bad behind the paywall, though don't expect much in the way of scoops or revelations. Accuracy would be nice, of course. We'll see, this'll probably be it for me.

Internet time scale (post or perish)? Loss of editors to cost cutting?

I miss the pre-Internet days when I could see my cat 4 results in tabloid newsprint there.

Subscribed to the magazine sometime two years ago, decided after about two issues that I would not renew. Half-page interviews ending with "log on to velonews.com for full interview"? No thanks. I would rather save the paper.

I would take issue with Cyclingtips. I find that they are a refreshing change from the norm. Reviews seem like real reviews, lots of pieces that go beyond just the normal race report or mega star profile.

Velonews changed their tag line from “the journal of competitive cycling” to some pablum about “participation-based” cycling a year or two ago.
If you aren’t a Celebrity Fondo-participating high net worth jock sniffer, I don’t think they have content worth looking at these days.

Was being sarcastic, I assumed that's how most journalism gets done these days.

I agree wholeheartedly! CyclingTips is probably the best of a bad bunch but reading the comments section just leaves me frustrated at humanity, similar to why I ditched Facebook etc.

They also have a podcast that is very entertaining.

I like Cyclingtips, overall I think they work hard to do a great job covering competitive cycling. Just wish they posted more results from races they aren’t writing articles about.

When PinkBike merged or bought CyclingTips (I don't know which it was) Caley Fretz and James Huang joined CyclingTips. They were at Velonews before the transition over there. They also do a better than average jobs following women's cycling at most levels - just starting to pro team - with several women on staff (Abby Mickey, Sarah Lukas, José Been) in content production areas. José Been is an excellent presenter and you've probably heard her on some of the women's races. I think she appears in the series of done by the Ronde organizers that show the behind the scenes of the race coverage. CyclingTips could do more with women's cycling, but they are making an effort and improving over time.
