Default Best time to sell bikes?

I am thinning the herd and am within striking distance of bicycle monogamy. Is this a bad time to be selling carbon road bikes with Sram Red? I just sold a friend's Pinarello Paris and I had to cut the price on fee-bay repeatedly to move it. Am I better off waiting until spring to sell a Cannondale Supersix? Flooded market right now?

Maybe the market is finally wising up about carbon.

The market isn't 'wising up' about carbon, but the used market is simply not strong for most brands. I buy a lot of used stuff and it's stunning how quickly market values fall. Two-year old stuff in nearly new condition has arrived at my doorstep for 2/3 off of the new price. Or more.

It's generally a buyer's market when it comes to the world of used bikes.

What Saab said. 40% (at the very most) of the original price seems to be the going rate of used carbon framesets that are even a few years old, even if barely ridden.

Thank you very much. I will lower my expectations in the spring. You guys are extremely helpful, as always.

I didn't realize that they depreciated THAT quickly. They make Ikea furniture look like a sound investment.

Wait until spring. I sold a carbon frameset in November of last year and am still embarrassed to tell anyone how little I got for that bike.

I've had a bear of a time selling ANYTHING. I sold a scandium VooDoo Limba CX bike for a cut-rate deal and took a haircut on another frameset that I bought for a good price, but when I had to sell it because I changed my mind, I was practically begging people to buy it.

Oy. Everyone wants everything for nearly free.

I don't think there is a season per se. But selling bikes, parts, etc. is not a money making venture. Be prepared to accept what the market will bear.
If you look at completed auctions on ebay you can get an idea of what things will sell for.
You might get slightly more by waiting for spring- but that could be offset by the fact that the bike will be that much older. Newset stuff will have hit the market making yours worth less.
My MO is to sell off as much stuff as I am done with while it is still current.
For example: If you were selling 2011 SRAM Red stuff in the spring it still had value- right now you have to pretty much give it away, even if it is new or nearly new.

I just listed some bikes for a friend on craigslist.
Funny, every other response I get is a scammer.
A lot of attention for 29 MTB stuff it seems.

    buyers market indeed.

I set my expectations as a seller by instead asking myself what I would be willing to pay (not overpay) for the used item that is probably not in as good condition as advertised. Put another way, how much of a bargain would I require in order to accept that something is not in brand new pristine condition. It's a huge discount for me (50%+), especially something carbon or racy that might have an undisclosed history of hard use or abuse. The only time I've not lost my shirt selling a bike was when said bike had a cult following.

I'd guess the best time to sell is at the start of the season. That said, I've noticed some high-zoot cx bikes selling for a song even though cx season is arriving.

I have had the most success and satisfaction with selling when I set the price very low and just accept that I will take a loss and someone is going to be happy. In another case I just gave away a bike to a friend who I knew liked it and needed it more than I did.

It is pretty common here to sell stuff at nearly unnaturally low prices and donate a portion to the operating costs of the forum. You're going to take a bath and it and knowing you are doing some good with the proceeds makes the loss much, much easier to accept.

I used to sell used bikes and take bikes on consignment.
People are often shocked when you tell them that as soon as it's ridden it looses 1/3rd of it's original retail value.
    It's true.
Often in the industry there are two ways to do it: either you sell the bike within it's current model year that you got on pro-deal or you keep it forever.
Or, you loose your ass to some extent.

Letting it depreciate another model year isn't going to help. The red group is going to start feeling old the more people see pictures of the 2013 group.

I've sold bikes year-round and wouldn't recommend waiting. The quality of the ad and pictures is much more important than the time of year.

Take your Sachs to bits, pack it in cosmoline, hide it the garage 70 years,
then your grand kids will really make out.

One problem as others have said is timing. Summer doldrums and then the fall is not time for road stuff.

The general suspicion of used carbon (never raced, never crashed, but maybe driven into a garage door).

And finally the threshold. Seems to be about $1500 max that folks are willing to shell out to a stranger. I feel your pain, since we have a brandy-new 2012 Giant carbon that we have to unload due to my kid's insane growth rate. Grrrr.
