I am leaning toward an Odyssey. Honda reliability. Front wheel drive. Big enough. They seem relatively inexpensive bought used.

    Anything I am missing?

Nope. I'm on my second one with collectively about 350,000 miles...no issues. You'll need Blizzaks or the equivalent in the snow. Mileage 18 city and 27 highway with a full crew inside. I should add that this particular van has been t-boned twice with airbags deployed, etc. My wife walked away both times and the cars that hit her didn't...Jetta and Mustang.

Honda rides well. I’d say better than the Sienna. But we went Sienna due to AWD, as we get a ton of snow around here. MPG isn’t bad. Highway, average is 26-27mpg.

A newer Honda Odyssey minivan is as comfortable as driving around in a huge Mercedes-Benz S-class.
If one can deal with the unsexiness of a minivan, they are probably the most capable bicycle haulers.
If purchasing one used, very carefully examine the maintenance history on the transmission. Very pricey.

I can echo what other have said about the noisiness of a cargo van. I bought a Chevy 3500 Express to tow our trailer and haul all our toys. It works great, but took about $500 worth of Dynamat sound deadening material to make the interior tolerable.

We loved ours. As kids aged out, we went back to an SUV with AWD for my wife's primary vehicle, but the Odyssey is hard to beat. We did oil changes, wipers, and maybe a set of tires the entire time we owned ours. Zero issues.

    Ummm.........that thing is...........................AWESOME! Love it.

My 06 Pajero fits my XL 29er jus fine with one of the seats down.

Yeah but you had to let the air out of the rear tire to make it fit.

I run tubeless and didn't have means to re-seat bead on tires so that's why it's deflated, not for space. I mean, even in pic you can see there's a good +9 inches in between the saddle and the roof of car...........so..................

Thanks for all the pics and details. I didn't really need a yellow bobble head gif though. He is for the OT section. I think the tire deflation comment was a joke.

My current Honda has been awesome. No complaints and if we trade in a car for a van we will probably keep the FIT over the Impreza. But the the Odyssey is near the top of the ugly heap. I know its a minivan and I should paint flames on it if I want it to look cool. Strictly from a looks perspective I like the Caravan or Transit Connect. Again still minivans. Do they intentionally keep minivans ugly to keep sales of SUVs up? At least the small cargo vans look utilitarian.

Here's my contribution, 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan ES. Certainly ghetto for this place, but it's been a fantastic vehicle. No pic with bikes, but you get the idea. Usually just my wife and I, two road bikes, two MTBs and all our needs. I'm 6'5" and she's 5'11" so room for tall and long bikes is paramount, plus the ability to put them on top if we sleep inside. Replacing it will not be fun with everything today being infotainment-distract-o-rama, mandatory-stow-and-go-balast, etc. Still gets 19/26 mpg after all these years.

Sometimes a back seats of a convertible car are the best place to carry large stuff. At the closest gardening shop I used to see a lot of people trying to fit a kind of small tree inside the cabin of a van, then next to them come the guy who simply drop the stuff in the backseats and drive away in no time.

Jokes aside, do you get the Hyundai H1 in the USA ? If so this might be one of the closest thing to a VW Multivan you can find.

That Hyndai H1 looks great but I can't find it in North America.

I have a Ford Transit Connect that I really love. Can post pictures of my inside-the-car rack later. (but it's just some 1upUSA van trays)

Please do, very curious about the transit connect. I don't suppose the footprint of it is any smaller than a typical minivan like a Honda Odyssey?

transit and transit connect only share the names and are entirely different vehicles. The first one is a full size van similar to a Mercedes Sprinter. The later is basically a Ford focus turned into a minivan. I'd have to check but I believe the transit connect is narrower than the odyssey and similar in length in the long wheel base version (not sure if the swb version is available out of euroland).

edit: according to wikipedia only the high roof LWB version is imported in the USA to avoid tariffs. Something to take into accounts as the high roof version can't access to many indoor parkings.

IIRC, the Odyssey is around a foot longer than the Transit Connect. The TC is definitely a bigger-on-the-inside car!

Mine is a bit of a weird case, as I wanted all the creature comforts of the Passenger version, though the functionality of the Cargo version -- so I got the Passenger version, removed all the rear seats, and built a simple plywood bed that we sleep on in the back.

Ground clearance is pretty marginal for year-round rural use. Sienna's got inches more clearance.
