Default Back in the Day: show your pics

Was cleaning my file cabinet yesterday and came across these two photos. This was around Christmas 1998 and solo riding for 5 days in Big Bend National Park and a couple of days across the Rio Grande in Mexico with a family I had met in 1997. This was a follow-up to a ride I had done the previous year.

In 1997 I had gone out to the desert to heal myself after a rough year; losing my dad early in 1997 and closing the doors of my business a few months later. I was back to school teaching and really didn't want to be with anyone, especially my immediate family. I rode in the desert for 5 days (plus two in Mexico) where I experienced all sorts of things and met all sorts of interesting desert people.

I went back in 1998 because the Big Bend region is one of my favorite places on the planet and wanted to continue my journey. (I haven't been back in post 9-11 USA. Can't cross into Mexico anymore I hear which really sucks.)

    BigBend2.JPG
Photo 1: start at the visitor's center. Bike is my 1996 Merlin (which I still ride daily), panniers are small 1982 Eclipse, North Face sleeping bag and a Sierra Designs Flashlight (the previous year I used a bivy), I also had a MSR stove and a Big Sky Bistro French press for making coffee. Food was probably dried pasta, oatmeal, and a few cans of sardines.

    BlackGap2.JPG
Photo 2: Black Gap road a year later. I took an identical photo in 1997 and wanted to see the difference a year made. The cone shaped peak in called the Elephant's Tusk.

BTW, my scanner is not working for some reason so I just took a picture of them. I also this was the first time I made my own prints in a darkroom I had off my science lab at the school I was working at.

Big Bend is definitely worthy of being a favorite place on earth. I am doing a trail run out there in January that goes down Black Gap road. Also, good news on the horizon - the Boquillas border crossing is going to reopen soon.

    That's great news!
Going to be in the USA by the time the Desert Sports ride (formerly the Chihuahua Desert Challenge) comes around. Planning on being there for sure!

Sweet news. Always a good time and the State Park riding is great. More info here, and check out the suave looking fellow in grey showing the director of the state park (who led the same 32 mile ride 4 days in a row) what a badass Coconino mountain bike is all about.

October 1975, sophomore year of high school. I rode my bike 15 miles from home to take that photo. For a 15 year old then, that was a big deal. That was my first cycling hat, too!

    Uncanny.

    Got some cash
    Bought some wheels
    Took it out

I like this thread. Wish I had some pictures.
Back in the day: I ran into Joe Breeze and Otis Guy on Paradise Drive. I had this wind gadget fastened to the seat post of my California Masi to add resistance. Joe asked me- this was a rhetorical question: " are you from Oregon."
    That's all I got.

Got tons of pics in storage in New Mexico. What I think the best bicycle photo I've ever taken is a Polaroid of Garro on a dry lake bed in Nevada. I'll have post it when I have the chance.

1994 MOBRA sport class. Game face and gate on

I thought jersey's and suspension were for suckers. Sweat use to get in my eyes. But this was the only time I wore a headband. As I recall I did very poorly in this race, so i never wore it again.

I reckoned the sting of sweat in my eyes made me want to finish quicker......

Texas in 1981 or 1982...I was at least 9 yrs old because that was the minumum age to get a USCF license back in the day. My very non-PC category was "Midget". Should have saved my old license! Still have the trophies I won. I won a lot of races by being the only competitor. Back in the day very few kids were racing bikes.

USCF used to have pretty strict rules about your kit as well. Black shorts, etc. There was basically no kids cycling gear back then.

The bike was a Fuji w/ 26" wheels.

    At the start...

    The final climb...

I remember being REALLY mad at my Dad because he would not let us wear hairnet/leather helmets. I hated that helmet so much!

OK, I recently scanned some old slides using a not very high tech scanner, so pardon the quality. Here we have the weekly training race around the Kirkwood Industrial Park in Binghamton, NY (back when Binghamton actually had industry). Our club was the Southern Tier Bike Club (STBC) and these photos probably date from around 1974. I'm not in any of these because I'm taking the pictures.

The fans made it all worthwhile:

Love this thread! Richie rocking the silk jersey . . . and the hair!

Turns out that in 1979 I raced the Bloomfield (CT) Crit wearing KK Jellquist’s helmet and Peter Polack’s shorts. Oh the horror. Here are two gems from 1989 or 90, the Firecracker Crit (Middletown CT) and Mazda Crit (Providence RI).

    trh firecracker 1990.jpgtrh mazda 1990.jpg

The good: the Klein was a screamer, and those 36-hole Campy Victory rims w/ Sprinter 250’s were bomber. Loved those Look Mondrian-design shoes!

The bad: the pink Bollé’s (inside the helmet straps), soft shell helmet, and the chamois in that RA Ando kit was awful, only Jamlane was worse.

The ugly: sad excuse for a ‘stache, eh?
