    Cool Alchemy / Blacksmith Project Bike #1 - MS2 Stainless ISP Di2

    Blacksmith Cycle's first collaborative project is with Alchemy Bicycle Co. - the goal is for us to design a line of race bikes built to high standards with major value and cool technical characteristics...simple, right ;)

    For the first frameset, I was looking to design a stainless steel racer that was high on comfort + stiffness, and low on weight.
    After visiting the Alchemy Austin facility a few months back to discuss tube selection and finishing options, we settled on:
    - KVA MS2 stainless steel with ovalized chainstays and super-thin seatstays;
    - Standard external headset with ENVE 2.0 fork;
    - Internal Icarus Di2 battery with micro-USB charging port;
    - Satin finish with bead-blasted panels and polished logos.

    Hope you guys like the finished project, albeit still missing the head-badge which we are having laser-cut.
    The aim was value in the given marketplace, so we are hoping for a sub-$3000 final retail price.
    To be sold through our shop and online, we will offer options for:
    - ISP or normal seatpost;
    - internal, Di2 or external cabling;
    - stock geometries or full custom sizing - this one is built for my freakish proportions!

    Our next project is more of a "monster" steel race bike, so stay tuned for that one in a few weeks!
    (Been speaking with Noah from Velocolour about doing the paint jobs on that one)

    I am a big VSalon lurker, and have major respect for the builders on here, so feel free to chime in!

    I've got a wild build planned for this one, with silver anodized Tune stem, Bobo headset, SmartFoot cranks and 34.9 Cappy!

    That is very, very nice. I like that you'll have the custom, stock, and the USB. Keep'm coming.

    The frame looks nice as you might expect from Alchemy. Your build will not be my style but it's not my bike. Nice looking for sure though.

    Beautiful work and design. I've always liked breezer dropouts and ISP's on steel are starting to look nicer to my eyes

    Interested in knowing what you used for a seat tube to make the ISP?

    Thanks for the feedback, guys.
    I am pretty stoked to see her in person soon.
    I'll let Dave chime in on the tube selection, but I do know they were laughing at the notion of finding a seat-tube+ISP that was long enough to match my 84.5 cm bb-saddle height!
    Hence the super-long headtube...even with it I'll run a significant drop from saddle to bars.

    Best,
    Mike

    Given Mike's freakish geometry, we couldn't use anything from KVA's MS2 selection. There simply wasn't anything long enough and strong enough so we looked elsewhere in the KVA repertoire. Luckily, we found a performance wheelchair frame tube that would be long enough and bear the stress of being a tall guy's ISP. It's pretty helpful working with a tube supplier that manufacturers performance tubing for a variety of applications.

    Yes. In this case the battery is situated in the seatmast. We've seen some charging ports lower but we thought accessability to the battery and the internal routing tube for the brake made the top half of the bike a better zone for the port. This thing is also going to Toronto, the home of the second sloppiest slush in Canada (Montreal holds the crown; I once encountered knee deep brown muck there). It makes sense to keep that USB port as close to blue sky as possible.

    Looks really nice! I havent heard of KVA tubing. How does it compare to the stainless offerings from the Columbus and Reynolds?

    We've heard awesome things from KVA about this tubeset in terms of rivaling the weight of XCR while being able to be more heavily manipulated in terms of tube shaping. I'm very excited to ride this baby to see what the results are.
    Not that there is anything wrong with XCR, but it is perhaps a touch more lauded than it deserves to be, given the simplicity of the tubeset.

    Looks good. Only recomendation I have is to ditch all the text on the seatstays, it's not clean and doesn't match the look of the rest of the bike IMO. But it's your bike, do what you want! Good luck with the project.

    Quick answer: KVA MS2 is wedged squarely between XCR and 953. Lighter and a little smoother riding than XCR but not quite as strong and light as 953. It's in a nice place as it's way cheaper than 953 and more readily available while being more sophisticated than its Italian cousin at a similar price point.

    The mini usb is a great idea, but how are you going to keep the grit and other debris out of there? Do you have a cover of some sort? The high mount solves a lot of that, but that stuff gets everywhere and the contacts inside that connector are small. Nice looking bike! Good luck with the project

    There's a rubber plug that goes into the port when it's not in use. We kept it out so folks could tell what it was in the photos.
