That's the thing. It's more than an athletic achievement - it's also a reflection on a very particular sort of life.

Default It has Begun!! The HAM'R

The competition has begun to be called, HAM'R Highest Annual Mileage Record

Kurt Doesn't start until January 10
Steve hit the ground running on January 1 with a 222 mile day, followed by two 187 mile days. So three days in, 596 miles. Not bad as a warm up for a big year.
William, I am waiting for his official start date.

The competition is 365 days, so if anyone here wants to join in....

William started today. He is, however, running at a huge disadvantage. After a serious frostbite issue in a long ago ultra race (1994 24 hours in the canyon) he can only ride 90 minutes in cold weather at a time and it has been cold in Texas.

So day one of 365, William Pruett is in for 88.6 miles.

Any time you want to start, Rabo. So what is your start date going to be? The record attempt must be filed with the UMCA 4 weeks in advance.

I can't get over Tommy Godwin. A dynamo hub, four speed, steel
frame... and he was out in the dark of night in all kinds of weather....

If I had a recumbent with an enclosed faring and rode on a
track I would still have a hard time with twenty five miles/day!

    (25 x 365 = 9125)... ok, I'm out.

    That guy was incredible!

OK, so here's the update. William is still getting warmed up and Kurt is beginning the end of this week, but the one who is running hard, Steve Abraham is in full form. As of January 6, end of day, 1132.6 Miles for a running average of about 189 miles/day I consider this a pretty good start for a year where he must average 205 miles to set a record. Now, just to be clear, Steve is not looking to match the record. He has set his sites at about 86,000 miles, obviously a mere 189 miles a day will not suffice, but this is January and he is looking to hit peak mileage in July.

I would say that this is an admirable goal.

OK, so at the end of 11 days, Steve Abraham has ridden 2262.15 Miles or 246 less than Tommy Goodwin had at the 11 day mark

After 2 days, Kurt Searvogel has ridden 411 or almost 9 miles ahead of pace and

in 8 days, William Pruett has ridden 263 miles or 1375.4 off pace.

    The game is on!!

Ok, so in the first 17 days of his attempt, Steve Abraham has ridden 3145 miles, at this point Tommy had ridden 2722

Ok, so in the first 8 days of his attempt, Kurt Searvogel has ridden 1588.9 miles, at this point Tommy had ridden 1362

At 8 days, Steve Abraham had ridden 1474

I am not going to post William's numbers until his pace begins to look like this is a serious record attempt.

Just for perspective, how many of us actually average PER WEEK what these men are averaging per day?

I am curious, how many of us will ride more miles THIS YEAR than these men are going to complete in January?

    Quantity v. Quality

I have ridden 162 miles since Friday, and will ride probably 13-14k this year. I love bicycle riding and racing, but at this point in my life, no thanks. A divorce, a girl that would not know my face, I am out.

I love that these guys are doing this, it is nuts. Just not for me. Bicycle riding became a job for me about 15 years ago, I promptly quit. I want to do it, I do not want to have to do it.

I hope these cats kill it, just not for me.

So how many calories do these guys go through in a day?
Back in the old days I would easily go through 7,000 calories
and I weighed 138 lbs. I burned it up faster than I could put
it in. My guess is they are eating while riding.

When comparing the relative mileages of these attempts, I think it is important to look at where th attempts are taking place - I believe that Steve is doing it in the UK, as Tommy did. I can't comment where Kurt is doing his attempt; if I were ever going to have a crack I choose somewhere with nice weather year round (Majorca? Calpe?).

Wow, Majorca is, what, about 80 km across.

So, 100,000 km on Majorca in a year.

    Interesting.

Might get a bit tired of the scenery.

A bit like doing it on a track.

Steve is not taking the easy way out, it's pretty cold here right now. On Sunday he did head south.

    231.0mi Distance
    5,092ft Elevation
    15:31:12 Moving Time

    Meanwhile in Florida

    210.8mi Distance
    862ft Elevation
    10:51:14 Moving Time

I'm concerned Steve is making a rod for his own back, if Kurt gets the record I doubt those hills are going to be much consolation.

I don't often recommend Florida as a great place for cycling, but it seems pretty perfect for a record attempt like this. The ratio of rideable to non-rideable days is very high and the lack of climbing keeps average speeds pretty high.

Florida is only where Kurt is at the moment. The races on Kurt's schedule for the year include many of the toughest ultra races anywhere in the world. He will be riding throughout the US for 365 days.

I agree that given that it's January, Florida is a smart place to start. Who but a lunatic would include Solo RAAM and No Country for Old Men 1000 Mile in a year long attempt? There is not a trend to "taking the easy way"; just being smart in a year long approach.

Please note I'm in no way criticising Kurt, I'm just hoping that 'our man' isn't hurting his chances.
