    Default 50 years ago.......

The anniversary of Tommy Simpsons death 50 years ago.....I know some will have mixed feelings about his passing but he's still a big persona in the history of British cycling.......

Here's a pic from today with my old mucker Kevin and his dad Vin (Denson ) who you may have heard of, also a legend of British cycling, on Ventoux today for a memorial ride...oh and Wiggo showed up......

I really like Bradley Wiggins. I didn't like him based on the stories of him at Grand Tours -- hence my comment earlier today in the TDF thread -- but what a guy with a great sense of the sport. On Ventoux, on Tom Simpson's anniversary, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was riding a period-correct vintage bicycle.

On Tom Simpson... William Fotheringham's book "Put me back on my bike" is high on my list to read.

Eddy Merckx: "Why do you ask me that? Why do you think I'm here? To watch the others win?"

Fotheringhams writing is always interesting.....Denson and Simpson were pioneers in that they were 2 of the first to move to Europe, immerse themselves in the racing and become successful.....

They also unveiled a spruced up monument on Ventoux yesterday, well worth a look if you ride up the mountain.

Thank you Andy for your posts and picture. I was aged 15 when Simpson died so it is an event I remember well. I have never ridden up Mont Ventoux but twelve years ago I found myself on the north side of the mountain (without a bike) and I ran up through the woods and over the top and dropped down to the Simpson Monument to pay my respects. I hope I have a chance to view the enhanced monument one day.
