Default 2021 MTB racing thread: spoilers likely

I won't spoil in the first post, but I will say: it's back on!

Women's XCO Short Track Albstadt just concluded on Redbull.TV

Men's XCO Short Track is next!

Not sure what Pidcock's story is.

My story is that these short track courses continue to look like the sort of thing I'd love to have down the street.

Thanks for the reminder. I wish Red Bull covered more than just the UCI World Cup. Is there anywhere else to watch other races?

the Swiss Cup races leading up to Albstadt are on youtube and they contain most of the heavy hitters. Production value not as high and in German (well, Swiss German but hey) but it's bike racing.

You have the be in the top 40 in UCI points to start the short track. Pidcock's only points were from the Swiss race last weekend, so didn't have enough points.

And cyclingnews did not put MvdP by the favorites? What have they been watching.

Not able to watch live this morning, but I’m loving the names I see in the results sheets. Lecomte! Batten! Pidcock!

The smartest and obviously one of the strongest of the day won. And how he railed that banked corner to get back on Schurter's back wheel was just pure gold.

agreed. he surprised Schurter on the final pass and did a really nice job all day long. good for him, he seems like a nice guy.

Pidcock from place 100 to the head of the race was unreal considering the cluster of the first laps.

And I think Pidcock also had a puncture which make his 5th place a really brillant effort. He kind of stalled at some point after passing Avancini but I think it is really a common pattern when you burn too many matches at the beginning and he recovered well to steal the 5th place from Cooper in the last lap. There is just no way to "just follow the wheels" or use teammate support to recover in an MTB race, if you want to really recover from a previous peak, you have to lose time to same level riders going at a steadier pace. He still managed it way better than MvdP and I would say that course suited it more his small stature.

The trails looked soooo smooth. Like a park.
What does a modern FS add in weight? 1 lbs? Almost all on FS but not Pidcock and a few others.

Koretsky and Flückiger were also on hardtails. That makes 3 riders on the 5 places podium on hardtails yesterday.

If you take the winner as an example, official Orbea website states that the Alma is 840gr while the Oiz + shock is 1740gr both in size M so a wee bit less than 1kg.

Note that the winner didn't had a dropper either, and only him and MvdP were on standard seatpost AFAIK. Actually Mathias Flückiger ended up out of contention because of a dropper cable failure which forced him to spend the last lap of the race out of the saddle. So the dropper failure effectively put him out of contention for 1st place.

A lot of that is the effect of the camera. It really flattens out the trail. Nino hit a decent sized double on the last lap.

I meant the surface of the course looked smooth, not the technicality at breakneck speed.
What will the olympic course be? Lot of elevation? The fields will be deep.
France stepping it up as they always do in big championships.
next week (Nove Mesto) will be exiting!

Koretsky was taking tighter lines on a bunch of the corners, he can really control a bike for sure. Inside lines other people weren't doing.

Nino went huge on that last jump before the sprint, that was a shocker. He was really willing to take some serious risks to try and drop Koretsky, very cool Koretsky didn't let him go and fought back for the win.
