Lucky Bettiol! Much to big and highpowered a chase group to catch him...

Is MvdP in the former Sagan role of the monster talent that’s light on tactics?

Speaking of monster talents, Cecilie on the women’s podium again ...

EF managed a masterful, tactical race. With Vanmarcke in the break, Bettiol behind, and Sebastian Langeveld both splitting the chase and blocking once Bettiol went clear, they made the most of their numbers post-Paterberg. Which almost no other team could manage. With only protected riders remaining, Langeveld soft pedaling, and a handful of blown domestiques, the chase went nowhere. This team was on the ropes only a season ago, with Michael Woods the only real hope for some redemption and then they turn around and win Flanders? They've had a strong spring, but they've turned a bunch of outside chances into a real result. Chapeau.

I think his confidence in his bike handling skills tripped him up, somewhat like what happens occasionally in cx. Maybe he was forced to the right on the road and had to bunnyhop the planter or maybe he just thought he could bunnyhop the planter no problem and didn’t try to avoid it and maybe he thought he could stop his bike with a broken front wheel while signalling with one hand for his team car, but none of those things worked out so well. Given how much he had in reserve for the effort he put in to catch the race and eventually finish fourth in a quality field, he definitely had the strength to win had he not bolloxed that maneuver. Otherwise he did seem good at putting himself in the right place at the right time. Maybe he’ll think about this one a while.

That soft pedal by Langeveld after leading the group around the corner to the early part of the Paterberg was such a key move I think. Charge toward the turn, brake, turn, then sit up and move right, closing the treasured road edge off. Van Avermaet had to shoulder Langeveld to one side to get past.

If vdp not taken his hand off the bar he would not have crashed. I agree with him having over confidence in his indeed exceptional skills.

I don't think it was over confidence. More like a lack of lucidity. You'e 250k into a race, break your wheel just before the next berg and you are desperate to get help from your team car. I'm sure he would have still crashed with two hands on the bar anyway, it looked like the wheel suddently collapsed at the next bump.

Great ride by Bettiol. Winning a monument as your first pro win, it must be incredible. It's not like he is coming from nowhere, he got 5 top 10 in the last 3 weeks, 4 of them at Tirreno Adriatico including a 2nd place in the individual time trial + a 4th place at E3. It feels strange to say it as I was used to see them racing stupidly in the previous years but the EF team really made the race as a ... let's say it ... wolfpack. They were in all the moves in the last 120k, pretty much like how Mapei/QS/Deceunik are used to race.

fwiw, he said he didn't know Bettiol had gotten away. actually thought he was racing for the win and was expecting a sprint until about 5km left, when he saw Bettiol up the road. also said he would've went with him on the Kwaremont, but was too far from the front to have done anything (or see him go).

anyway, at this stage in his road career, I think it's tough to say if he's light on tactics or not. he's made a couple of them work out, at least. I think yesterday was more about survival for him and making the best of it, after the crash. still, the group he was in had the champions of: Slovakia (3X world champ), Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands (him), World, and Olympics. and the only one out of them who beat him in the sprint was the pure sprinter (Kristoff). this, after the massive chase he'd gone through. had that not happened, maybe he would've had something else up his sleeve...?

I didn't realize Van der Poel isn't racing Roubaix on Sunday. Was this a recent change? I think he'd have a great shot to win well over Flanders. Cyclocross guys rise to the occasion and even the velodrome sprint would suit him. I was looking forward to seeing him battle Stybar and Wout. I'll be pulling for Stybar followed by Wout I think.

If you look closely at the still photos of VdP's crash it looks like his steer tube may have broken or his stem broke loose.

He broke a few spoke when landing on the flower pots and his front wheel collapsed a few meters later. That was my assumption when I saw his crash and it is comfirmed by his own words on the aforementioned cyclingtips link.
