Groenewegen against Viviani and Gaviria "with two fingers up his nose" in "De Panne sprint yesterday.
The crashes seem to get ore frequent every year.
    ps Oliver Naesen for Flanders.

Wow that was a pretty great finish there. Last what, 20-30km was back and forth. Nice win for Stybar with WvA in 2nd, both beating Van Avermaet who at the end looked like he had just done too much work and didn't have any legs left. And Albert Bettiol in 4th? That was unexpected I guess. EF-Education has been all over the races this spring, but I thought it was Michael Woods up there (no sound on the coverage.) And Jungels the road animal in 5th.

Stybie has always been a class act. And I dream that I could look as good on a bike as he does.

It's marvelous to watch though. And one day races are far more variable in their running than GTs are so I still enjoy watching them even with one team being dominant. At least they mix it up between a variety of riders.

Any team looking to compete with DQS is going to have to do a "Team Sky" and beef up their rosters. There is no substitute for having large numbers of riders capable of winning in the finals of these top classics. GVA was strong today but he was on his own. Same with WVAert. If they each had a strong teammate or two with them things might have been different. It would have, at least, made things more challenging for DQS to pull off their domination.

DQS and its predecessors haven't had a grand tour contender on their roster since Toni Rominger. They focused on the spring classics and it has clearly paid off. GVA has no support, Sagan just has Oss. Hopefully Jumbo-Visma will build a strong support team for Van Aert.

They did have Rigoberto Uran for two seasons after he left Sky, and he was considered a GT contender. He left QS for Cannondale in 2016. Lefevre seems to have largely given up on GT contenders, though he does have Bob Jungels who has long been touted as one. Winning GTs is hard and requires many more factors to go right for you for a lot longer than winning one day races does. And, besides, the audience his sponsors are marketing to care far more for the Classics than the GT gc titles so he's done the right thing.

They have a certain swashbuckling aplomb to them now that SKY has never had. I enjoy watching Quick Step disassemble a race. After Ian Stannard dissected them at Omloop in 2015, they were undoubtedly humbled, but they've has gotten sharper and sharper.

There's even an Alaphillipe t-shirt as a swashbuckler!

So the 1-2 by cyclocross world champions.
De Vlaminck just said it in the days before, that a cross season does not impede a strong spring.

Catalunya ain't the classics, but I'm glad to see Michael Matthews win. Always seemed like he was a good rider but never could break out in generation where QuickStep and Sagan dominate.

Well the CX boys are looking good in G-Wevelgem. They look strong.

Where are Van Avermaet's teammates? How is he supposed to battle the might and numbers of DQS, Jumbo and Bora on his own?

    Fantastic race!

Who knew DQS could lose a classic in 2019? MVDP came flying up in the spring until he got boxed in on the left side of the road. Gaviria got hip checked and had his sprint stopped dead.

Some impressive rides. When will WVA ever tire?

    MVDP still managed 4th place.

Viviani also got hemmed in and ended up outside the top 10.

Degenkolb going blind and having to lie down quickly just after the finish.

Kristof said "I always have a good sprint when everyone is tired." True enough.

Letizia Paternoster was on the podium of a WWT race for the first time today. Not bad for a 19 year old, especially considering that she held off Bastianelli for that position.

    Gent-Wevelgem...how times change.

Remember the 89 or 90 edition when it rained the whole way and Sean Yates managed to forget to drink in a two man race long break away?

And she was chasing Kirsten Wild! That must be a familiar feeling after so many races on the track.

Edit: Look at all the Italian women in the top 10!

I missed the race only saw that Sagan was in a break on my phone

Were WVA, MvdP and Styby all in the break at some point?
