I watched that race this morning and what an incredible race it was. This ruling after the fact is such a disappointment. Can you imagine if this crap( ruling after the game is finished) was done in the NBA, NFL, or MLB. A significant number of fans would complain to the extant that ticket sales and TV ratings would see significant drops. I guess I just don't understand European sports. It would have been very easy to either disqualify or warn him during the race. I saw him following the cars during the telecast. Do the judges expect us to believe that they weren't watching the telecast. It's too bad, but bicycle racing will continue to be a very minor sport in the US and this is just another example why. It reminds me of pro wrestling without the showmanship.

I haven't seen it but from decades of seeing racing in person and on TV (and competing in my younger days) this seems extremely heavy handed. If they don't like him drafting to get back in after a mishap then give a rolling warning as it happens or DQ him on the spot. But to wait hours and then DQ him after he wins the race appears, on the face of it, to be draconian. I'm guessing the people who make these decisions have never pinned on a number and lined up and competed or finished a race.

Seems like awarding someone a base in the world series on a balk in the 2nd inning after the 7th game is completed.

On another happier note, I can't wait to watch the women's race tomorrow .Our women's team is very strong, as are the Dutch and Italians, and it should be a very competitive race.

If the UCI doesn't want riders to draft or profit from sticky bottles they should just ban team cars. Get food/bottles from static points. Let the riders get stranded and DNF in case of a flat that isn't repaired by foam or plugs and use surdier tires.

Problem solved, no jury needed, no appreciations issues, no unfairness. Just racing, equipment choices/gambles and fate.

The cyclingnews.com article leaves me sad for whatever humanity may still left in the sport.
The digital age has sucked so much out of bicycle racing.

Well surely lack of radios makes it harder for wheelsuckers.

It would return racing to a degree of character it hasn't had for quite a while...

Don't you think that statement was just one of frustration by Rivera? I was wondering why the hell they let Van Vleuten go up the road at all. Fck there being 100km to go, that's her thing. Go away and stay away. I can only guess but maybe they didn't know she'd gone until after the shuffle regrouped a bit and one orange jersey was missing.

The plan was likely that Vos would be in the chase group too. That would have paralyzed it . They obviously wanted this scenario I would say, from watching the whole thing.
Start of the year Van Vleuten was training with the man of Michelton Scott on 8 hour rides I remember reading.
    Just wow!

The following group saw her leave....she rode off the front from them partway up the big climb. By the time they reached the top she had around 1 minute on them.

Yeah I saw it. Italian rider on the front looking back the whole time. Anyone who wanted to go had to get around her. If there were radios, every DS would be screaming go. I bet they were surprised when they got to the top and couldn’t see Van Vleuten going down the other side. They were racing like they still had radios. Without radios I think you have to go after Van Vleuten. But she did it right. She went, they froze, she wins.

Awesome, they didn't have radios. Maybe the lack of radios can bring back some better racing. Annemiek took advantage of the situation and the peloton has to evolve with smarter racers. And kudos to Chloe for giving her all. 4th place is pretty impressive for someone with so little experience in the sport. No guts, no glory.

Lizzie starts to go around ELB then hesitates and drops back. I was watching the BBC with Chris Boardman and Rochelle Gilmore and both noticed that right away. They felt that she wanted to go but decided that she should ride her own pace since there was still 4-5 minutes of climbing. Maybe another rider was strong enough to go but no one wanted to drag Lizzie or Anna along, though really I don't think that any of them could go with her.

I don't think any of them expected AvV to put so much distance on them in that short time and compound that with a disorganized chase and it was game over.
