    Saying you will not declare a stage winner, but you will declare GC gains and losses, is inconsistent and nonsensical. Which somehow seems perfect for this sport.

    Jumbo (De Plus) was riding tempo in the GT-Kruiswijk group to make sure De Plus would come over the top.
    There is no certainty that Bernal could do 38(?) km by himself against several others.
    Pretty much over now.

    What does the UCI rulebook say about halted races?

    The Tour rulebook seems to take precedence. The UCI doesn't seem to have a regulation governing this:

    Tour Rule Book

    ARTICLE 18 | ROUTE

    . In the
    event of an incident or accident that might affect the
    smooth running of the race, the race organisation
    may, in agreement with the commissaires’ jury and
    after informing the timekeepers, decide either to:
    [...]
    28
    change the route;

    temporarily neutralise the stage and decide on a new start point;

    rule that the stage is void and cancel the results;

    cancel a portion of the stage as well as the intermediate rankings that would have taken place there and start the stage again from a point near to where the incident occurred;

    to respect the results at that point or restart the stage, taking into account the gaps recorded at the time of the incident.

    The rules leave the race commissars and race director a lot of latitude to decide what to do on a day like yesterday.

    That result feels like such a let down. Pretty exciting 3 weeks of racing till the deus ex machina result yesterday. Booo...

    You guys sound like France. It was the weather + European sports bureaucrats. The same people who brought you fines in Swiss francs for sock length. The king is dead, long live the king.

    what, you guys expect ineos to apologize for having the best two riders in the field and knowing what to do with them?

    alaphillippe would have have lost 2min+ to Tignes had the stage followed its original route. He would have lost more than he did today if the stage had been longer and covered two mountains.

    No I want them to have to ride for the win in a fair contest. If stages were awarded at arbitrary locations throughout the tour Thomas De Gendt would be wearing yellow.

    It is possible to recognize Bernal's quality and feel that nullification of the stage was the "most fair" option all at once.

    I feel like the strongest rider won the race, the organizers did the about as good as they could with the circumstances they were handled, and we missed out what were shaping up to be 3 great mountain stages till Pinot had to abandon and the weather did it's thing. Even Bernal missed the chance to ride across the line, stage winner or not, and know that he just rode himself into yellow.

    What would Henri have done ?

    Finished the the stage.

    Pinot, really should see an exorcist, he has the curse of the monkeys' paw.

    Bernal is a worthy winner for sure. I also like the fact that a columbian is finally winning especially knowing how they were treated by their european peers in the 80's and 90's.

    I don't think there is a fairest option. Even as a french guy I have to accept that the nullification of the stage would have been heartbreaking for Bernal and for good reasons. Any option was a compromise and the only good thing in that kind of circumstances is to follow a clear rulebook. In that regard I think the UCI need to do some clarifications.

    I think he was a worthy winner too, particularly given his level of experience and the fact that the defending champion was on his team.

    Thomas thinks he has another win in him and Froome is one legged on the home trainer and presumably of the same view. Thomas will be 34 next May and Froome will be 35. Bernal will be 23. Time for Brailsford to tell the other two they will be riding in support next year. Or at least send Thomas to the Giro as team leader and then have Froome and Thomas ride in support. Assuming Froome is even in proper racing shape to contest the TdF.

    i looked back at bernal's palmares and 1st in paris-nice and tour de suisse this year, not always a guarantee, but with SKY, it usually means their man is on the way to tour victory. should have seen this coming.

    Bernal has been waiting to be allowed to go for it for a little while now. If he stays healthy and the team can keep Froome and Thomas motivated and fit plus bring on some younger ones we could see some domination. I feel rather sorry for Alaphilippe, but it was all quite enthralling.

    Bernal was always the better bet than Thomas. The question was whether he would be allowed to go for the win, and there’s no guarantee that Thomas wasn’t planned as the winner of stage 19 until the stage was cancelled. I sensed that Wiggins in his commentary felt this was Thomas’ chance and now that’s done. And Wiggins likely knows well when you are done in Brailsford’s world.

    Eddy Plankaert on Sporza stating that Ineos never was challenged and if they wanted they could have GT drive the pace and send Bernal up the road and it would have been 5 minutes.
    That is really another way of looking at it instead of "the best Tour of the last 30 years".
    Good for the sport to have two South American tour winners this year already.
    Bernal for the next 10 years?

    I wonder if Alaphilippe can do this again or if this was his one chance. He’s not a pure climber but is a racer in the tradition of Contador. He attacks and rides on instinct but also has the talent to make attacks stick.

    Future GT contender or “limited” to shorter stage races, stages and classics?

    He’s obviously a shining star in the sport.
