I’ll be keeping watchful eyes and ears on the news in the next few days. The win was surprising.

Too bad for Wout--sounds like he pushed it just a touch too far. I hope he heals well.

now that I've seen a picture of the corner in question--I'll say, again, that I don't get how they use barriers at the TdF. Metal feet sticking out into the racing line, barriers arranged in a way that creates a double apex where no one will expect a double apex. It's a race of tenths of seconds and the barriers are deployed like living room furniture.

Dunno if it's already posted here.

He cut the corner too closely to the barrier. It's that simple. He took a risk to gain a tiny amount of time and it didn't pay off. The 90 riders who made it around that bend before he arrived gave that barrier more room and had no problem.

Ineos will crack Alaphillipe like a nut in the high mountains.
And I so hope that I'm wrong.

For sure. I'm still confused by some of the ways barriers are used. But I'm also outsmarted by my dog on a routine basis.

What a finish at La Course.

There's a Paris-Nice in my recent memory (last year?) where Alaphillipe went out great guns and looked totally ready to take the whole thing, and then like a stage or two later he was gone. So yeah, he's a great rider and rides with a lot of style (though that style includes his inability to keep the handlebars/front wheel straight) but he's got a ways to go.

Alaphilippe on the rivet in the last couple miles. Great stage.

Pinot wins on the Tourmalet! Alaphilippe beats Kruijswijk for second. Thomas looses 36 seconds...

    Great performance by Alaphillipe.

Pressure on to survive the big stage tomorrow -- if he holds on, this is the most amazing tour ride we've seen in a long time. I can't recall a classics puncheur holding yellow in the third week, and I've been paying attention since '81.

With all the science in training. How can some teams get it so wrong?
Although the teams that we know apply a lot of research (Ineos-Jumbo- QS) are where they need to be.
So surprised in Alaphilippe. Good to see the French do well.

It's not getting it wrong. The human organism is still fallible and will always be fallible. If it were as simple as being the best, LeBron James would have ten NBA titles to his name. But it's never that simple.

JA is in the form of his life and I hope he holds it. But there's still a full week to go, and the hardest week is still to come. This TdF is 2/3 finished but is really only just beginning. There's a lot of racing to come and the race is far from decided.

Well, for one, because the level is incredibly high among all riders in tour. Just go look at some climbs on strava. very fit riders (cat 1-2) can easily ship 1-2 minutes to the best amateurs in a 7% 2 mile climb. now, extrapolate it to the tourmalet. Even quintana blowing the f' up 3 minutes down is still a world class performance, just not the best. your tour run can be over for much less...
