Well, Froome is sidelined with various broken bits and pieces and is removed from the Team Sky/Chemical company equation. If Thomas is on form, I doubt Froome's absence will make a difference. Froome rode for Froome last year and didn't really help Thomas win, other than by just being there (except when he was tailed off in the mountains) and creating a bit of uncertainty (including for the yellow jersey). So, no Froome won't make much of a difference and the team is still super strong. It could change if Thomas is not on his 2018 form and/or Bernal loses time early on or crashes. At present I think the race is still firmly in the grip of the defending champion/team.

As for the others, Dumoulin has just been operated on and with minimal racing between May and July and recovering from injury, he is unlikely to be a factor and perhaps the team might tell him to ride the race as training for the Vuelta. Roglic and Nibali both rode the Giro and are unlikely to be competitive. Porte is not currently on 2017 or 2018 form. Bardet has his moments, but needs more consistency. Likewise, Pinot is not quite Burgundy. Movistar could ride well, but who for?

    Is there anyone else?

But for the strength of the reigning champs, I'd say the uncertainty could create openings, but Thomas et al look too strong on paper for the race to pan out any differently that the years prior.

Geraint Thomas just crashed out of the Tour of Switzerland. He's off to hospital for checks. I am seeing reports of a broken collarbone from those who were watching it live.

    Egan?

Shoulders were okay. He removed his jersey easily at the roadside without assistance so they could get his radio off him and put on a track jacket. He was evidently disoriented right afterwards and had a nasty bash to his eyebrow. So possible concussion is the reason for the hospital trip.

Best part of Eurosport TdF coverage so far is Bradley Wiggins reporting from the back of a moto. 1.) He looks like he is totally enjoying himself and 2.) he’s narrating events like a pro, sitting straight and relaxed while the moto zips around race traffic and road furniture.

Think that was a Bahrain Merida rider. Not sure who though. Groenewegen took a real hammering too. Earlier Fuglsang got pretty bloodied up by a crash on one of those shallow curbs that took out an edge of the peloton at about 6km to go.

Nice win by his lead out guy, Teunissen, though. I thought for sure it was Van Aert, but that may have been Van Aert tending to Groenewegen after the crash.

Tomorrow is the TTT. Teunissen said in the post-race interview that they targeted that one for Steven Kruijswijk, so he hopes that Groenewegen can recover well enough not to be a man down.

I just figured out - maybe you knew - that Trek is showing some sort of replay/highlights for the Giro Rosa on their website.

The bonus probably not enough tomorrow to keep yellow. Hope Lotto Jumbo will not ride Groenewegen off the back.
With the Belgian -German and Dutch national ITT champions on board they will likely be flying. Mike Theunissen also a strong time trial rider with the boost of keeping yellow.
After vdP-van Aert- Tim Merlier (last week) the current and ex cyclocross riders keep tapping the wins out. (Mike Theunissen ex crosser).

Nice win after the team sprinter hit the deck, more so considering how far back he was inside the last km.

    Jumbo Visma yo.

Sounded like they wanted Groenewegen's legs in the TTT for the purposes of giving Kruijswijk a boost towards the yellow jersey. But I think you are right - they will likely be flying and Groenewegen will have first pull (if he can get out of bed) and then wobble to the finish on his own.

PMG Sport also are showing videos of each stage - a short highlight and a longer one with lots of action. It's in Italian and comes on earlier than the Trek show.

Excuse me, is there already an thread for “NBC Sucks”?

Paying a subscription fee and being subjected to an endless onslaught of commercials, that’s rich.

#asktejay why does NBC make its Gold customers sit through commercials for erectile dysfunction?
