Nibali has been pretty gracious in defeat. Without the antics with Roglic (or realistically, had both team directors gotten on the phone and agreed to co-operate for longer term benefit) then maybe a smallish loss might have translated into a smallish win. Nibali did animate the stage into Como and instigated the attack on the Mortirolo and took time back off Roglic in both instances, which helped him and Carapaz. Nibali just wasn't ever able to dislodge Carapaz.

Oh well, onto the next race (the annual Sky warm up to the TdF yawn fest)...

    Always been.

That said, Pinot's attack was really fierce. A flanders specialist would have been proud.

Pinot looked great. He didn't get away but he put some hurt into everyone else. And Fuglsang still looks like his legs are working well.

Does this sound stupid to you? People do carry metal or glass shards in healed wounds after accidents, but none of them are planning to ride the Tour. And those shards can indeed cause a tissue reaction. And infection. I don’t know. Sometimes the medical help in the peloton feels a bit in the dark ages.

BTW Wout van Aert got second in a sprint finish won by Sam Bennett at the Dauphiné today.

I'm going to guess it's more complicated? But yeah, this seems like a case of making an incision and removing the offending shard and closing it up with a few stitches.

Froome headed to the hospital after a training crash on the TT route this morning and is out of the Dauphiné.

Cyclingnews is reporting a broken femur for Froome. No TDF for him this year.

That is career threatening for anyone, and more so at this stage in his career. Very unfortunate to have this happen as races should be decided on sporting terms, not injuries.

Not a fan of Froome, but I don't wish crashes or injuries on anyone. But if I am being honest, a small part in the back of my brain is looking forward to a more exciting Tour. I am probably a bad human.

I would have preferred him to be banned for his doping violations. But a crash is ugly for anyone.

Sad that all the predictions that Barguil was torpedoing his career by signing with Fortuneo-Samsun are coming to fruition. Sad except that he seems like a total knucklehead.

That's really bad news for Froome. Femurs are no joke - any crash that breaks it will have messed up a lot of other parts.

Sounds like for Froome, compound fracture of the femur, fractured elbow, fractured ribs. Wout Poels said a gust of wind caught Froome's front wheel while they were going 65kph (40mph) and knocked him straight into a wall.

Put me, KonaSS and Geraint Thomas in the possibly bad human category.

On the one hand, that is a horrible crash with career limiting/ending injuries and hopefully he is able to recover in due course rather than go out on account of an accident in a pre-race warm up.

Yet...it does change the TdF from snooze fest to something with greater potential, Froome avoids the unpleasant statistic of taking team leadership off the defending champion, not once, but twice in his career, and, my pet one, the likelihood of Froome being the only four time winner has increased.

Froome's misfortune aside, an interesting stage win. Cyclocross riders are creating the headlines in 2019.

Wait. Chris Froome is out of the Tour and Wout Van Aert beat Tom Dumoulin in a time trial? What is happening right now?
