That makes sense in a nostalgic old-style European cycling tradition sort of way. If I can say that without it sounding like a criticism.

I'd say the sponsor being italian would have made a stage win with an italian rider a good opportunity.

Roglic just put in a fantastic time trial... Simon Yates, not so much...

Dinner had to be gun at Lotto-Soudal's hotel after that bike change debacle.

What's up with all those dropped chains these days? Are the front electric derailleurs so powerful they launch the chain to fast? Why can't the riders put the chain back on their own?

Super short chain stays, big chain rings and close enough chainlines so everything works with disc brake spacing and caliper spacing is the culprit me thinks.

I thought it was hilarious when Demare complained that Ackerman was too aggressive.

What an interesting day in the Giro today! Amazing what a few bumps do to a race.

Joe Dombrowski up there with the favorites today. Maybe a top ten is within reach if he keeps it up and others crack.

And now the excitement comes from going downhill, especially on the curvy roads of today's stage, and few riders do that better than Vincenzo Nibali. And Carapaz rode very well I think.

Dombrowski crashed while trying to retrieve something from his back pocket and is now 10 minutes outside the top ten. And Roglic hugged a barrier - literally - otherwise he'd have ended up in someone's garden several feet down.

How long has Roglic been on this run of form? It will be impressive if he carries it for another two weeks...

Since he started racing? Here are his top 5 finishes since 2013, but the results really kick in during 2017.

If Nibali loses the Giro to Carapaz he will re-visit his "issues" with Roglic I'm sure.
Letting a super climber back in the race is never a good idea.
Love Roglic's demeanor, he is calmer than his team management in the heat of battle. Don't see that much.

I had to chuckle about Nibali comparing himself to Contador. The one major difference between them is Contador wasn't one to blame other riders or play tactical head games. Contador just went for it, if you wanted to join him and share the work that was fine but if there was a GC competitor up the road he chased until the catch was made or he blew up trying.

I think Nibali has so much pressure on him from the Italian media and fans. He can only fail in some way, even when he wins because he is constantly being compared to Coppi and Bartali etc. etc. We were in Lucca watching on a café television, and the man next to us said he didn’t like the way Nibali won his races. No style. He makes it look too hard.

Meanwhile someone like Scarponi could do no wrong. Who of course is the reason Nibali won the Tour and Giro.

    Tough crowd.

Pressure comes with the job. He is paid (rather well) to ride a bicycle. And talk to journalists afterwards. Probably a lot of others would trade their current situations...

I agree with this, but I also agree that significant pressure exists none-the-less. After all, the brain is just a mess of grey matter.

Who cared what these guys say in press conferences. Most sentences relayed by medias are taken out of context without even mentionning the original question and the avalanche of stupid questions the 5 minutes before.

Not to move this away from the race, but this statement says everything about the modern American media industry (of all leanings). I assume it's the same everywhere.

Carry on about the race, but your statement is true, whether involving bike racing or anything else. The cycling media surely is trying to make a dramatic story where maybe none exists. These things are, after all, events designed to sell newspapers or other content in 2019.
