Just start the GT with 3 mountain stages with hard climbs such as Colle Delle Finestre, the mortirolo or Stelvio and put stringent time cut so half of the peloton is disqualified in the first 3 days. Then pursue with flatter stage. With half of the peloton out crash shouldn't be that much an issue.
Or first 3 stages are Redhook Criterium and then.....

If I was Sunweb I would take Dumoulin out, let him heal, and be back for the TdF.
Otherwise you're going to combine a bad Giro with a bad TdF.

I agree. But I think there is nearly no doubt this will happen. He took a chainring to his knee.

Truthfully, randomness is the best part of the grand tours. The competition arises. No lack of motivated competitors.

Abandoned either before the start or in the neutral zone. Pounding rain today. Rainwear in full implementation. Good day for the breakaway, though aside from climbs at the start and midway, a lot of this stage is downhill(ish).

Probably smart. He was likely not going to contend for the win. Time to recover and reassess the goals of the season and maybe consider the Vuelta later in the year.

Today’s stage will record finish time on the first lap of the final circuit and record stage win on second lap. Seems like everyone has run out of dry clothes. Nibali was part of a committee asking for some form of neutralization.

Also of note is that two members of Nibali's team, a rider and director (former rider) have been named in association with a new doping issue. I know it's hard to believe that doping exists in pro cycling, but apparently it's a thing.

Pea soup sprint. Looked like Viviani might have spun a wheel trying to jump and sat back down. Not worth risking it. But Ackermann won again, coming around Gaviria. That's two for Bora-Hansgrohe. No Italian winners yet, though Moschetti has been in the mix.

Lame move number two at the TOC.
First the invention of the 3K rule because of Levi.
    Now this.

    Agreed.

I watched the highlights last evening and it seemed like a total shit show.

(Re)made for US television? Just seemed weirdly obvious. Like current hand-in-cookie-jar politics.

Don't be surprised if there will be some Sunweb -Lotto Jumbo cooperation/ favors later in the Giro now that TD is out.

They were riding for Giulio Ciccone who is a native from Chieti which they crossed midway through the stage. He missed the break.
