Either these two guys agree with me or they are just two stunned birds who hit a plate glass window 500m from the finish and timing problems is the only explanation they can generate with their scrambled brains.

I must say, the more I hear from Fuglsang, the more I’d like to hear. He isn’t the smartest on contracts (and maybe not on tactics) but he’s refreshingly plain spoken. And he curses seamlessly.

From when he attacked, I was still the one who was putting in the most effort because he always said that he was fucked. But he did the same at Strade Bianche, and there he still got me, so that's the game – that's the tactic.

What goes around comes around for Alaphilippe. He played Fuglsang last time, this time Fuglsang found a way to beat him, even if it was only for third.

To me, yesterday's Amstel showed yet another reason to get rid of race radios. In this case, the leaders (and anyone watching on TV/online) were not getting accurate time splits. They made tactical errors based on bad information. Instead of racing for 1st and 2nd, they were swarmed by the chasers and both lost. It made for the most exciting race finish I've seen in years. Imagine if all races had to play out without race radios providing time gap information? Just an occasional neutral motorbike official with a chalk board...

There is always a lag between the moment the gap is calculated and when it is announced on the radio or through the commissaire's car. Aditionnally DS are used to lie about the real gap to influence their riders or avoid them to demoralize.

    J. Fuglsang and J Alaphilippe can't pretend they expect the gaps to be perfectly reliable, they know it is never true. They played their card, they lost. It happens.

Alaphilippe and Fuglsang reminded me a bit of Roche and Criquielion at Liege in '87...M VdP playing the Argentin part.

Thijs Zonneveld proves the arguments of false time gap information and vehicles - and motor drafting to rest here :(twitter posts in Dutch): "Veel auto's en motoren tussen Alaphilippe/Fuglsang en achtervolgers" | sporza
Bottom line is the last 3 km Allaphillipe and Fuhlsang started "dicking around" as my fried called it.
I wonder if vdP putting Allaphillipe to shame in the Brabantse Pijl (mid week) , and his early attack, tricked Allaphillipe in doing the same. And honestly, it should have gotten him at least a 2nd place.
QS DS with his implicit (explicit?) accusations is likely to blame more as Allaphillipe self.

^^^ you saw that that victory was 29 years to the day from Mathieu's, right? pretty crazy.

that was also five years before he was born.

Yes, thinking the key to success Michael had was Adri.

If his game has upped in MTB like it has in CX and road this past season, Nino is in for an interesting year...

Also, a star crossing disciplines is great for all disciplines. Wish it would happen more.

IIRC the win from Adri vdP was controversial because in slow motion you could see him grab a rider next to him , and slingshot away to an opening to launch his sprint. Got to find that shot somewhere.

It seems all is fair in the foggy, frenzied world of the high speed field sprint.

Of the record comment from the organizer: "Disqualify AvdP and I get a "little racer" (Luc Roosen) as a winner".

From CyclingTips (after making a pretty convincing case against any time problems and that Fuglsang and Alaphillipe bolloxed it plus MvdP rode max schnell):

With wins at GP Denain, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Brabantse Pijl, and Amstel Gold Race — and fourth-place finishes at Gent-Wevel[g]em and the Ronde van Vlaanderen — [Mathieu] van der Poel has had a more successful classics campaign than the Olympic champion, the three-time world champion, and just about everyone else in the sport for that matter.

I doubt Valverde will pull the grind up "the Muur" off this year.
Bastogne with an easier finish will be interesting too.

Will he finish in the top ten? He’s been going backwards a bit this year. I hesitate to say “showing his age” - maybe holding back something for the Giro? ;-)

Almost looked like he was trying to get away from that crowd of people, not slingshotting. Got all unstable, too.

Weird there's a motor bike going to the line alongside them, too. Glad those days are over.

    Ha. Yeah, me too.

I'll go with Alaphilippe for tomorrow. See if he's got the heart to bounce back from Sunday.

Doesn't look like a slingshot to me. He was pushed to the left by the rider next to him and pushed him back a little to show him who's the boss and he won't surrender that position before launching his sprint.
