Mathieu Van der Poel is ridiculous right now. I'm struggling to find a similar sports figure who, in a team sport, did not have a team, but was still able to beat the very best. Pistol Pete maybe?

Wait til Sky signs him for a bajillion dollars for next year.

Got to be Quick-Step doesn't it? Just seems like they'd want him. Maybe I am over-estimating their budget though. Would he go to a French team given his Polidor genes?

MvdP contracted till 2023 by Corundom. Money always talks though.
BTW he will not be in the Ardennes classics except the Amstel Gold Race because the start of WC mtb.
If his mtb'ing improved like his cross-and road this season we'll have a winner.

I just saw this article on it:

    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/van-...-have-to-wait/

The way things are going with him, Corendon-Circus will be in the World Tour and Katusha, Trek, and Dimension Data will be relegated to whatever division of cycling races Wednesday night worlds in Columbus, GA.

Mathieu Van Der Poel is still focusing on the MTB until the olympics in 2020, is talented enough to be a force on its own without a huge team and I'm pretty sure Corendon-Circus will be invited to all the nice classics next year so it will be pretty much a status quo until the end of next year.

On its own he probably won more UCI points in a few weeks than the aforementionned teams since the start of the year. I'm only half joking. We will see during the riders trade period if Corendon-Circus keeps a similar CX focused roster or if it is trying to attract more rouleurs and classics oriented riders in a bid to become a WT team. Their sponsors definitely have the money to finance a world tour team if it is their wish.

I can't get over that the winner of the Amstel is going to switch to MTB for a few months. This cat rules.

Will be interesting to see what happens with his contract to 2023, his mtb and cross ambitions. I am opening up a big box of popcorn to watch this one unfold. The guy has lots of options out there now. But can he ride the track?

I just finished watching and I think the time gaps were screwed up. There were a couple camera shots before the last kilometer that put the groups in the same frame. Amazing effort by Van Der Poel but I am going to bet it wasn't from 22 seconds off the lead in the final km. Someone will check the timing I am sure.

I just typed a crazy long refelection on Amstel and the classics season so far and my phone logged me out and I forgot to copy and paste it! Damn. It was good too.
In short VdP is a phenom. That bridge and that sprint was otherworldly.
The ability of him and Van Aert to dig so deep
Despite crashes and flats and bad luck is like nothing I’ve ever seen before.
VdP is like Bartoli but with even more power- He’s like a biomechanically Frank Vandenbroucke. He has the ability, the ego, and the physical body to dominate the sport in every way. There’s always, “the next Merckx” argument- but I’ve never seen a talent other than my pal Frank VdB who had it like Van der Poel
Van Aert is kinda the Lou Ferigno to VdP’s Arnold. But I think he could be a faster dumoulin in grand tours if he wanted it. He can suffer and push like no other pro I’ve ever seen. His performance in Roubaix was the most amazing ride I’ve seen. (Bernal’s domestique duties notwithstanding).
These two plus I’d add thiesj benoot too because you’re going to see amazing things from him- he literally can right now win any race in the world- from the TdF to Paris-Roubaix to LBL- are a new standard. Big tall strong kids who are not Diesel engines in any respect-but more like a diesel that also has a 1000hp 1000ftlbs torque electric motor too whenever they need it.
It’s exciting times! Can the old men like a super strong Valverde steal a couple? Can Alaphillipe make amends? Kwiatkowski? Wouldn’t it be great to see the new powerhouse Roubaix Gilbert body win in his old stomping grounds?
    Fun!!!
