It's a proprietary mix. I don't think they plan on releasing it to the general public.

Thanks! The dirt patina did add a certain je ne sais quoi, though.

Reliable, durable and versatile. Taking too long to wear out that back Conti though. Front needs matching.

My newly arrived Jeffrey Bock light randonneur. Built with SON SL fork tips and a very trick routing to a top cap switch for the Supernova lights. Custom rack. Nitto/Compass stuff, DA 9000 mix, Paul stuff, etc. I'm happy to say the ride seems to match the looks.

New bike day for me. After a lot of thought about options, this one won out.

    Fun!
How is this going to be used versus your pink one?

Got time for a dissertation? Good.

Well, I made the mistake when I specc'ed (sp?) the pink bike that I would use it as a commuter/rando bike most of the time with the 650X42, and on occasions where I was going to get rowdy I'd take the fenders off and proceed with rowdiness, perhaps even mounting 650X48. I'm a big believer that bigger slicks are better, for me, most of the time, especially on rough or gravel roads/trails. Now, 2-3 years later I have learned a lot:

    1. Fenders (and generator lights front & rear) are invaluable for most of my miles on the pink bike. For the fenders to be really good/invisible while riding they need to be metal and very securely mounted. The ones on my pink Winter are securely mounted and metal, and despite Eric accommodating my desires by making the wiring detachable front-back so I could, in theory, take the fenders on and off, I just have not had the gumption/desire to futz around with dismounting them. Basically, the bike is wonderful as-is and I am disinclined to spend time and effort changing much of anything about it.

    2. I have ridden quite a bit of mellow gravel with the fenders on and it works, and is actually preferred as it keeps you and your stuff clean.

    3. If you are getting truly rowdy, that's when fenders are hazardous - especially the front one can get caught up on big rocks, ruts, etc.

    4. I am able, on occasion, to ship a bike and visit places where rowdiness is the norm, especially Montana and California. I also do get rowdy sometimes locally. I also ride down to Chicago pretty often and the Winter is too nice to leave locked up in questionable places.

    5. Shipping a bike is another place where fenders/lights/paraphenalia work against you. Not to mention that shipping involves occasions of frequent assembly/disassembly and other bike abuse. The Winter is composed of (as far as I can tell) pretty lightweight tubing, I don't want to deal with dents and stuff from my (always hurried) packing jobs.

    6. Because of #3, #4 & #5, I had in the quiver a Cannondale cross bike (2015 SuperX - which I nicknamed "The Hoss" because it took a beating and kept on ticking) that I would ship around (and ride locally) for rowdy and bike abuse situations and ride to Chicago where I wouldn't have secure bike parking. The Cannondale (which I still have, have returned to stock and is for sale for a cheap price, btw) actually rode quite well and was generally suited well for the role.

    7. As you might have divined, I am a bike nerd, big time. As a bike nerd, the Cannondale, which would be most people's best bike by far, and offers, by most normal human standards, exemplary performance, had some quirks that meant it was not PERFECT in its role as The Hoss. Most "significantly" was that I could only clear 650X42 in the rear rather than my preferred bigger tires.

    8. The Open promised, in marketing materials, from certain somewhat credible testimonials, and upon inspection, to ameliorate the "faults" of the Cannondale for my purposes.

    9. The Open is pretty expensive so I rode the Cannondale for a couple years dithering about the price/need to replace the Cannondale. Feeling self-indulgent I took the plunge now.

    Great answer.
I hear you on fenders- taking them on and off is a pain.
I don't commute in inclement weather enough anymore for it to matter, but back in the day, full fenders on a dedicated bike were a must.

I know, that's the one way this is much worse than the Cannondale.
