Our early teal opener is less than a month away. Mattie earned her Hunting Retriever (HR) title this summer. Can't wait to watch her work.

^^^ Our Springer is coming up on 13 and the walks have slowed way down. I like it. The rest of my day usually moves too fast.

    Yep.
Chelsea will be 11 this winter, and summers are always tough for her (check that coat). She will walk all day, just at her own pace, with a few spurts of young-dog energy mixed in. It's actually a good pace for my three small kids currently, though they're aging in opposite directions, speed-wise.
Probably hiking Great Falls this weekend.

Flame Retardant Replacement Toxic To Cats
That's awful, we need to say no to all fluoronated, halogenated, brominated, and even phosphorus-based flame retardants and stain repellents. This crap is toxic, bioaccumulative, endocrine-disrupting, cancer-causing, and immunosuppressive. Seriously. It's legal to put this stuff into things we buy (like bluesign® label baby pajamas and my Eddie Bauer Men's Guide Pro Pants) even though it's proven to cause thyroid and kidney cancer, and transfer into babies' bloodstreams through salivary and even sweat contact. The most benign, and insidious, way this stuff enters our body is through dust from all the fabric, upholstery, carpet, and clothing that contains it.

And the industry response is that once a chemical is proven harmful, it's simply redesigned. Like C8 to C6 (it's a chemistry thing), and reintroduced to the market. Rinse and repeat. So the right answer is to ditch the whole class of chemicals. And to realize that the fire-retardant "benefits" are bullshit, and maybe it's OK to have to wash your guide pants after spilling coffee on them, or wash your baby's bib after they puke on it.

My apologies if I was too preachy on the subject of toxics.

So here's a photo of Sprocket, the #cinnamonwondermutt , modeling boats for a recent photo shoot.

She's pretty good with mountain bikes too.

Well, everyone in this house is good with Sprocket. So don't worry about the preaching ...

This is our landlord's new puppy, Ben. He's a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Long name for a tiny guy, and he'll only get to about 45lbs tops. Very alert dog, very focused on people and eager to please. Puppies can be distracted by almost anything, but even while snapping at a bug or something on the ground, he's checking out what you are doing and always looks up & at your face when you speak. I spent about 25 minutes throwing a stick with him in the backyard, and he was already figuring out fetch and drop. Seems like a fun dog to work with. Cute as a button too. Reminds me more of a Brittany more than a Golden Retriever, which is what everyone thinks he is.

Hard to get a non-blurry photo of him. He's max wiggly. Nice to have a dog I can borrow for an hour or two though!

Tollers are awesome dogs! Is the owner going to hunt with it?

No but he says he is going to train the dog like he is. He's got training dummies and a launcher. And they live on an old beaver pond, so there will be plenty of jumping, swimming and retrieving.

When I worked at a shelter years ago, the police from surrounding counties used to stop by to look for drug dog candidates. They always talked about focus and attentiveness along with energy. They very rarely took one of our dogs, but when they did, you could see what they were talking about. This puppy is like that, though I don't know if Tollers have the right sniffer.

Oh man... Tollers are awesome! You said it, super alert and focused! They are great dogs to train. We don't hunt, but we have a little bit of property and love to play ball. Tons of energy and a fantastic personality. This is Ezra.

He absolutely loves people and being part of the party. If you want alone time, don't get a toller! They do not like being alone. Luckily he gets to come to work with me every day.

They also get along great with other dogs... if the other dog likes to play 100% of the time.

Ezra is a great looking dog! They seem to be an excellent size. And the rubber nose and light colored eyes add to the personality.

Tollers are great dogs. Definitely like a Brittany with a bunch of Lab personality tossed in for good measure.

My wife's miniature horses. She shows them in halter classes as well as drives them with 2 wheeled carts. In the past, we've had Quarter horses and I can tell you, that mini's are much easier and much less costly to own. Although, it's my contention that anyone who owns a horse is nuts!
