Good for you guys! We still miss BeeBee, the pit bull we fostered. If she and our old girl Dot hadn't been so far apart in age and physical ability, she'd be curled up on a bean bag at home right now. Or on my wife. Probably on my wife.

Random cold winter day question- what are people’s thoughts on naming/re-naming dogs at adoption?
How old is too old, etc?

We adopted Chelsea at ~5 months after she’d been found abandoned, adopted once then returned due to “attachment issues”, and fostered for a little bit. She was such a mess we just kept her existing name, and helped her (mostly) grow out of her previous anxiety. So, I’ve never gotten to name my own dog, and given our next pup (eventually) will probably also be in that 6-18 month old range, maybe won’t have the chance then either.

Our greyhound's racing name was CRV's Turncoat - doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. He was 2 years old when we adopted him and we renamed him Turner as a nod to his past. Maybe this doesn't apply because 1) I don't think he was ever really called by his racing name and 2) he's dumb as a pile of bricks, but we had no issue re-naming him.

There will be so many new aspects to the dog's life that a change in name will likely just be a new 'command'. Throw a couple of treats their way while calling out the new name and the pup will catch on quickly enough.

Don’t hesitate to rename her. She will get it and you will later wonder why you even thought it would be a problem.

Jorn, hadn’t seen that comic in years. Larson was the best.

I’ll also note that we’ve had the Dog mentioned above for nearly nine years now, so I was just randomly asking the question with our next rescue in mind. Advice duly noted and appreciated.

My boy had to be put down last summer. he was a rescue dog and the finest dog I could've imagined owning. 6 months have passed and me and the family are on the verge of being ready for a new furry family member. The search has begun!

No running today. Bob is in veterinary hospital having right knee surgery for a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament (equivalent to the human anterior cruciate ligament).

Indy passed away yesterday. Diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago. We thought she would be with us a little longer but she let us know it was
time. We shared watermelon in the morning but by the time I got home from work she was struggling. The end was peaceful and quite.

Time for tears as I type this.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. We have had goldens (3) for years. This one stayed a puppy through 10 years. Typical golden, always wanted to sleep at my feet and always just wanting to be loved. Not sure right now if I want to do this again.

You don’t right now, but you will shortly. No dog leaves a big void.

Sorry for your loss. Still one of the tougher things in life to go through for me. Good memories tho!

Our rescue white german shepard came to us at age 2 as Shiloh.
My daughter renamed her Luna after the women's pro mtb team and the white moon.
It's seven years later...her name is Luna
