Said goodbye this weekend to the best dog I have ever known. Over the last 14 years Roxy caught 25 squirrels, 1 Blue Jay (right out of mid air) and dug more holes in my yard than I could count. As hyper intelligent as she was she never learned to leave skunks alone. She let kids climb all over her and she let the cat snuggle with her. She was there for the birth of my three boys and she guarded them like they were her young.

Roxy was quick to make friends, everyone loved her and she loved everyone back unconditionally. A truly wonderful friend and companion.

A fine tribute to a soul any of us should aspire to emulate. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Roxy was a very special dog and we were extremely lucky to have her in our lives.

My boys are taking it very well but we've been preparing them for this for some time. My wife said she wanted to wait until next summer to get another dog and my immediate thought was that she wouldn't last a week (this is the way it's always been at our home and it turns out I was right.) A good friend of ours who has a beautiful Golden Retriever told us about some pups that were available and I'm going to go have a look at one of them this weekend.

I tend to think that way as well but sometimes I think it's just fate the way things work out. My wife was driving along a highway one day and found a little teacup Yorkshire Terrier out walking along the side of the road. She had Yorkies growing up and knew it was highly unlikely this dog got out in the middle of nowhere all on her own. The dog was so tiny and frail she had trouble walking through lawn grass. Either this dog was very lost or someone had abandoned her.

My wife took her to the local Humane Society and told them if no one came in to claim her she would adopt her. That poor dog was missing half her teeth and their best guess was she was anywhere from 14 to 17 years old. She adopted the dog and we took care of Abbey for 5 years before she passed away. She was a wonderful dog. Now she didn't choose us but maybe fate intervened. I think things sometimes just happen for a reason.

When we adopted our cat Maggie I sat down in a room at the Humane Society with my oldest son and several cats. One of them came up to me and I put her on my shoulder and she just stayed there, purring away. I love all animals but I am very much a cat person. I walk down the street and cats come out to see me- it's just the way it's always been. But this cat was just glued to me. I found out that someone had adopted her and brought her back. Every night since that day I sit down in a big green chair in our living room after the kids go to bed and Maggie jumps up and sits with me. I absolutely adore her. Did Maggie choose me? Was it fate that someone brought her back and I adopted her? I have no idea. This is the way it has always been for me and animals. One wonderful animal leaves our lives and very shortly afterward another wonderful one enters. I don't question the how and why or who chooses whom.

If you're looking at goldens you probably already know this, but I'd strongly suggest that you only buy a pup out of parents with certified hips. All reputable breeders now have both parents' hips checked before breeding.

Hip dysplasia is ugly, and no dog deserves to live with it. Only buying a pup from certified parents both encourages breeders to better the genetic pool by selecting against that health defect, and saves you and your family the heartache of a dog with serious health issues.

Yep. I've had two Labs and a Great Dane before so I'm totally aware of this. Both of the pup's parents are OFA certified.

Do you ever sit anywhere else? I wouldn't.

My wife says that if Daisy wears out her welcome, we will take her off your hands.

    Love Goldens. Enjoy each other.

Honus, you have gone a day with no puppy picture updates. Get with it.

You're worse than the women at my work!

Lots of play time makes for a tired pup.

Some play action with our young guy and the pittie from next door. Howl/barks contributed by the old guy.

I have a soft spot for pitbulls. I know so many people that are afraid of them (my neighbors in particular) and they can be such sweet and wonderful dogs.

This one is a sweet dog. However, she is very bouncy, a little vocal, and has no sense of her size and strength. I call her the wrecking ball. She came out to the driveway yesterday morning to give me goodbye kisses as I was rolling out.
