The goal for the -17 would be to have around 1-1.5cm of spacers under the stem. I think that roughly approximates the look of a quill stem, if the threadless stem is constructed properly. I want it as much for fit as aesthetics, plus I'd prefer not to #slamthatstem on such a unique bike - it's not like you can just go buy another fork. I think leaving 1-2cm of adjustability makes sense to that end.

Yeah, I'd still be going for a -10º or -8º without spacers underneath. Even if you don't want to slam the stem, -17º with spacers just doesn't look right.

I'd say cut the fork, but I know this is unlikely to hang around long even if it currently feels like it might... [*knowing wink*]

It was a very tough decision to let go for sure as I invested a lot of time in getting it the way I wanted - and that paint job - but sometimes it's a matter of millimeters here and minutes there and the truth is that while this bike fit well and is a wonderful ride, the custom Spectrum I had made, after I'd aquired the Sachs from JR59, is just a better fit. How that translates into the ride is subtle to be sure, and I'll miss looking down and seeing the Sachs logo on the flat crown fork and the beautiful paint and lugs, but it's better that this bike gets ridden regularly and I had a strong hunch that it would be a great fit for Dan. I remain tempted by the idea of keeping an eye open for when Richard's cue opens, just because ....

What's funny is if I'd been more proactive and jumped in TK's queue before it closed, as I was intending to do - really only thing that kept me from it was a cancelled work trip that left me unable to get to the barn before the doors shut, I wouldn't have had room for this either - and doubly funny because when I bought JR's Ellis, I could have bought this one too, but passed on it just out of having too many irons in the fire - and me being me, I probably wouldn't have thought to put the effort into the repaint - so by a strange turn of chance, by me not buying it two years ago, I got it eventually delivered in a way that totally works for my roadie sensibilities - i.e., it's as perfect as a handbuilt and handpainted piece of artistry can be (though I did already shed some paint off the inside of the chainstay - been a while since I've had to think about clamping a skewer tight on purpose). I do think there is something still marginally on offer in getting one made to measure just for me (and will eventually pursue that in another build) but this one seems to be close enough to want to keep around for a good long time. And thankfully Greg was able to pass along very detailed measurements on it so if I do get to talking to the Daves, Mark, Steve, or Richie at some point, I'll have a good benchmark to start from. Anyway, enough talk - time to go brave the cold temps and put some more miles in.

The 28H Nemesis' I had never felt sluggish, and I do ride on pretty bad roads in Central OR now, so running a Roubaix-type setup does kind of make sense....Vlaanderens, etc. That said, I happen to have a pair of all black Stinger 3s that could end up in the rotation here.

I think I still have those wheels sitting here. If you want them back I'll send them your way. That said, I've also got a couple sets of DA c24 tubulars that live on the Pegoretti and Crumpton. There's a reason the Nemesis wheels don't live on the A-grade bikes...do us all a favor and find Hyperon tubulars.

Gotcha. I think these are Newvex lugs. They certainly are pretty in person.

I also am not a huge fan of internal routing in general - there is an inevitable slight buzz that wears on me and I can never shake the concern of wetness accumulating in there.

It's a stainless steel pipe (tunnel) so nothing will/should affect it.

Ah, missed that when scanning the current offerings.. Good to know on the internal routing too - I'm on the dry side of the state now but after years in the wet I still carry some of that corrosion anxiety around.

If I can hunt down the components, I may have to take you up on that. I mean, Nemesis' are only 430g and that's not awful. Hyperons would certainly be great, and Shamal Ultra tubulars would also work - both are pushing more in the modern direction though. If I stick with 11 spd, the other wheel option I have is a set of Vision/FSA KOM TL wheels, which are around 1300g, nice and wide, and have exceptionally good braking (and excellent hubs) - they're quiet too. Either way, I doubt I'll have the Mavics on there long. The braking is excellent and they feel good and responsive - I just don't like things that make noise, and the brake track and FHB are both distracting in that regard, to me. I don't know how people ride the new ENVE/Zipp brake tracks or other textured surfaces, or deal with I9 hubs or similar. I want to hear my tires on the asphalt, that's it.

Lionel's suggestions are I think perfect; I wish my poor arthritic thumbs got along with Campy; it was a sad day I sold off all my Campy components.
