    Default Rex Cycles City Bike

    I'm finally going car-free to the greatest extent possible. To that end, I ordered a French-style "city bike" from Steve Rex. The porteur rack was built by Roseland Bicycles. I wanted to keep the bike modern while retaining the classic French aesthetic.

    Here are the specs in brief:

    -Dura Ace 7800 derailleurs, DT shifters and Sugino Alpina crankset w/TA Specialites chainrings (46-34);

    -Chis King headset, Phil Wood bottom bracket;

    -DT Swiss 465 rims (700c) with Dura Ace 7800 hubs (32h);

    -Rivendell Jack Brown tires;

    -Tanaka Fenders;

    - Nitto S83 seat post and Pearl stem;

    -Nitto porteur bars (designed by Jan Heine);

    -Brooks B17 Special; and

    Tektro 559 brakes with Dia Compe inverse levers.

    So far, so good. The bike is beautifully crafted, extremely stable with a front load and I enjoy the upright position and better visibility on city streets.

    I apologize for the poor picture quality but my digital camera needs new batteries and I resorted to my iPhone.

    That looks really good. Functional and maintains the aesthetic, but doesn't get too fussy. Looks like a fun ride, too!

    Looks great! Nice parts selection including the Sugino crankset. The smooth Rex frame is perfect for the look!

    The ride is surprisingly stable considering that I typically carry about 25-30lbs of stuff on my commute.

    Since the front rack is so large, I did not order rear rack mounts. We'll see if I regret that decision later on...

    Just a quick update: So far, this bike has exceeded all of my expectations. But the most suprising thing is the bike's handling. It's very responsive and I love throwing this thing into corners. Interestingly, it definitely prefers to have a load up front. Without it, the front wheel feels a bit light.

    Recently, I built up a new set of wheels with DA 7800 hubs and silver Mavic open Pro 36h rims. It now looks a bit more classic. Also, I'm working with Ely at Ruth Works in SF on a large porteur bag which should be ready by August. Additionally, I replaced the front DA skewer with a Pitlock skewer to make it easier to lock-up in town. Finally, I added a large Peterboro basket for trips to the grocery store, farmer's markets, etc.

    It has effectively replaced my Honda CRV and I couldn't be happier for it!

    Awesome update, thanks. Two more guys I didn't know about - Roseland and Ruth Works. Interesting that Steve doesn't have city bikes on his site, yet nailed the geo wrt the rack. Is this a low trail design?
