    Default IF disc road bike

As a teenage mountain bike grom an Independent Fabrication was the first road bike which ever tugged at my heartstrings - it was a British Racing Green Crown Jewel with gold King headset, hubs, chainring bolts etc and was owned by a full-timer at the Bike Cellar in Victoria BC where I swept the floors while studying. Embarrassingly I don't remember the owners name but that bike has been stuck in my head for the past 13 years.

The morning of my 30th birthday I picked up the phone and rang Gary at IF. We chatted and he seamed like a genuinely nice bloke; he explained their plans for the New Hampshire factory and what the big-picture looked like. Any concerns that IF had lost it's soul were quickly quenched. After a couple of conversations and emails with Gary and Jesse a large sum of money left my bank account and I waited impatiently for my number to be called. At least the wait gave me a chance to build some shiny new wheels and polish up the old groupset and brakes :-)

The brief was a bike to commute and train on - something with the same position as my SuperSix but with slightly relaxed handing, disc brakes, and fenders. I wanted it to look like your British grandfather's touring bike but with a modern twist.

In all honesty I couldn't be happier: Gary and Jesse at IF were great to deal with, the bike is gorgeous, and I'm extremely proud of it.

Really nice color. Looks similar to the color of my 2005 IF Crown Jewel SEC. Wicked nice all around!

I love the disc brakes on your road bike. Very futuristic! My next custom bike will have them too.

The colour is Midnight Blue Metallic. It's not super-metallic (which I like) but has great depth.

Sure - they'll all well-used a little beaten up but I'll grab some photos.

The fenders are on and ridable but I'm not 100% happy yet. I'll take some photos when I've made a few mods. As for the disc brake there was no extra work - the fork's mounts were positioned in such a way that with the P standard clips upside down the struts cleared the calliper, and on the rear the seatstay-mounted calliper meant plenty of clearance. I'll get some photos in the next few days when I've got the fenders finished.

Here are some pics of the wheels - polished 28h DT Swiss 240s Center Lock hubs and Center Lock adapters, with a Campag freehub body. Silver Aerolite spokes, aluminium front nipples, brass rear, and silver A23 rims.

It's based off a Club Racer. I really liked the Caffeine Racer idea which was used on Gary's wife's bike at NAHBS and they were nice enough to dig out the artwork and use it on my frame. Hence the painted to match coffee mug, although I'm more of an espresso man so the mug probably won't see service ;-)
